I have traced the Covill/Covil family back to Sibsey (near Boston) with the birth of Thomas Covil in 1804, but before that no sign. Are there are Covills out there who know anything about the family's roots?
Thanks
Laura

I believe the 'Boston' Covills originated from the Cambridge branch of the family.
Most were farmers andI have traced my line back 7 generations via Covill families in Bottisham Lode, Fen Ditton, Shelford and Hauxton - all in Cambridgeshire.
Probable first link was Sir Rchard Colville, from Colville sur Mer in Normandy, an army commander with William the Conqueror who was given the manor at Newton on Cambs Lincs border c 1080.
Just need to fil in the gaps!
Hope this helps,

Hi Bob
im linked to the Cambridge branch of the covill family covering all of the areas youve listed too, my family go back to Gilbert Covill 1740 do you go back further? and would you be able to share your tree somehow? Which branch are you linked to?
Im also intrigued as to how the Covills came to be in Sibsey in Boston do you know the detail?
Kind Regards

Welcome to the B-G forums. Unfortunately the two others who posted messages here did so and have not since been active on these forums.
You might instead try via the respective family history societies for Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire - or using a search engine, see if there is either an online 'Cambridgeshire Surnames List' or a 'Lincolnshire Surnames List' in which there are contact details for both the above.
Good luck
