Can anyone push me in the right direction for records or any info I can use to find out about my Grt. Grandfather Charles Simmonds,a ship's carpenter from Bristol, who was a crew member of a vessel lost at sea around 1901-1903.

A difficult period to research Merchant Seamen - have a look at the research guides on The National Archives (TNA) web-site - Merchant Seamen (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp?j=1#m)
TNA's research signpost on Merchant Seamen (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/merchantseaman1858-1917.htm?WT.lp=rg-3179) summarises the information.
Was you chap lost with his ship, or do you know if he survived?
