This may seem like a daft question but what is an annuitant?

I have noticed it does seem to be given as occupation to older folks, so was it something to do with a pensioner maybe??
Just guessing!
Anyone like to put me straight!
Thanks
Amanda

This may seem like a daft question but what is an annuitant?Annuitant - A person who receives an annuity

Annuity - 1) A yearly grant of allowance. 2) An investment of money entitling the investor to a series of equal annual sums. 3) A sum payable in respect of a particular year.

(from the OED)

So yes, you could think of an annuitant as being like a pensioner - but - it could be someone living off an income from investment or a holding.

I think I would prefer to be known as an annuitant rather than a pensioner!;)

And from the Dictionary of Old Trades and Occupations by Andrew and Sandra Twining:

Annuitant: A person who received an annual income (paid annually) for a set number of years, or for life.

Thank you so much for all your replies.
Does seem a strange thing to see as someones occupation!

Thanks again
