Death and Funeral of Mr. James TOMPSETT of WENBANS.
In the somewhat sudden death, on Saturday, of Mr. Tompsett, the parish has lost an old and respected parishioner. The deceased was a yeoman farmer of the old sort, farming his own land, of a family noted in Wadhurst for generations. Of a kind but retiring disposition, he avoided taking any public position in the parish, but for many years he acted as assessor of Income tax. He was a valued member of the committee and a steward of the Fat Stock Society, in which he took a great interest, and had often been a successful contributor. He was also a great lover of hunting, and a keen sportsman.
The funeral which took place on Tuesday afternoon in the Parish Church, was conducted by the Vicar, the Rev. G.G. Maclean. Among the family mourners were Mr Owen Tompsett(brother), Mrs Bennett, of Buxted (sister), Messrs. Percy and Newton Tompsett and H. Leney (nephews). Mr Frank Austen(nephew by marriage) and Mr. Rowland Smith.
