I am helping a friend trace this person

Margaret Emma Manning was born Nov 1913, I suspect she wasn't registered till March qtr 1914, mother's maiden name Shuttle ?
Apparently Margaret ran away in her teens, which would be in the late 1920's, she was only heard of once an that was about 1940 when a card which was posted from somewhere near Birmingham was received by the family
The person who is related to Margaret is now getting on in years and wants closure before she herself deaparts this life. We do not know if Margaret married

Any help much appreciated

I don't know how far you might get with this because it isn't easy tracing people forwards particularly when they wanted to disappear.

But one thing I am sure about is that you need to have rock solid certainty of your facts at the outset. At the very least you must have the person's birth certificate and be sure that it relates to the right person.

At the very least you must have the person's birth certificate

One reason for saying this is that it may help you to find her death which in turn could reveal much about her life. From 1969, death certificates show the date and place of birth. If correct, this information is much more use than just an age.

Did Margaret have any siblings? If you know siblings names and approx dates of birth, you may be able to search freebmd to confirm that the March 1914 entry is hers.

Are there any known details of the parents? - Names, location, service in WW1, occupation, etc?

Still trying to track down Margaret Emma Manning

I have listed marriages and deaths but it will take me months to cross reference them all

Her father was a soldier in WW1 and his details are well documented online

So I will press on I suppose to see how far I can get, a real shame as Margaret's sister is desparate to know what happened to her , she is getting on in years herself

Thank you all for your impute

Are there any clues in the card she sent eg postmark, contents? I presume you have seen the three Margaret E Manning marriages listed on FreeBMD. They are in 1933, 1941 and 1948 in Rochford, Hendon and Haverfordwest respectively. Although there's no proof your Margaret married, it may be worth a gamble on buying a certificate or two - I'm profligate with other folks' money!

Good Morning
Thank you for you help, I have eliminted 2 of the marriages by tracing the death's, the one married 1948 was to a Jenkins, can't find a death but Haverford is way out, her sister can't remember but she thought it was from somewhere like Birmingham but she isn't sure
There are no Margaret Emma deaths as far as I can see
I would love to find Maragaret for her sister before it is to late

I know they can't do a whole search of Margaret Mannings to find her death or marriage, can anyone tell me the best way to approach the ONS search, there is a certain amount of money can be spent on this search, her sister asks every week if she has been found, I personally find it a sad and difficult situation to be honest, I offered to help and so far have been absolutely no help in finding this woman, Grace, her sister was born in 1923 and she remembers Margaret, so my guess is she left home about 1933 ish, Grace was young at the time and is getting on in years now, where on earth do I go from here to help her sister's longing to find Margaret .
None of the deaths where they show the exact date of birth tie up with any Mararet E ??

The best thing to do is order the birth certificate that Jan found to confirm actual date of birth (word of mouth is invariably just that) and her middle name. There are a lot of Margaret's with that word of mouth birth date but it isn't impossible to solve. Did the father leave a Will and mention Margaret? Have you seen the postcard and what does it say?

I have now ordered the birth cert of Margaret Manning, I will then have concrete evidence of her birth date, she was born 1913, I am sure Magaret must have departed this life by now, then I can double check deaths, but like someone has already suggested, Margaret didn't want to be found for her own reasons, very sad for her sister, who every week asks if there is any news

Hi Folks
To all the people who have shown an interest in Margaret Emma Manning, this is the latest

Today I have at last received Margaret's birth cert, details as follows
Margaret Emma Manning
born 14/11/1913 in Manor Park
father Thomas Fuller Manning
mother Emma Jane Fuller formerly Shuttle
I have also drafted out a letter to the GRO asking how I can go about a blanket search of marriages and how much they would charge, obviously I cannot spend a great deal but if I know how much it would cost I can proceed, I just want to have some news for her poor sister, hopefully I can find something out, I have 31 marriages for Margaret E Manning, no Margaret Emma pops out, so on and on it goes on

Hi Louisa,

I'd like to throw this birth registration into the pot. If this is Margaret having an illegitimate child, it would have happened when Grace was about 10 years old:

Name: Thomas R Manning
Mother's Maiden Surname: Manning
Date of Registration: Jul Aug Sep 1934
Registration district: Romford
Volume Number: 4a
Page Number: 837

and this death registration:

Name: Thomas R Manning
Death Registration Year: 1935
Age at death: 0
Registration district: Romford
Volume: 4a
Page: 381
