I am ex Londoner, now a Kiwi. living lower north island, New Zealand. Researching early settlers to Carterton District, thoroughly enjoying the project, if not doing that, trying to do my own kith and kin of Pentony on my fathers side. Liverpool area, but originally came from Dublin. I live in a semi rural area, with two poodles, hens, cat and acre of land.. What made me subscribe, I was surfing and found LINDOP on this site, and this is one of the names I am researching from Staffordshire! I am off retirement age.. still active.. Neich (my area is Carterton District)

Hello Neich

I was down in Carterton last October staying in a cottage near Stonehenge - nice part of the country!

The Pirongia Historic Visitor Centre has a copy of a family history (Johnson) in which some members of the family were amongst the first settlers in the Wairarapa district. I've also borrowed a copy from our local library - I cannot remember its title but I'll find out and let you know (unless you've read it already!)

Hello Neich
Welcome to the forums. Small world. We lived in Carterton 2004 to 2007. Did up a villa in Tyne Street. Still visit friends there. All my family are in Wellington.
This is a great place for getting and giving help or just hanging out with like minded people.

I am up at Clareville, behind the Nursery, Neich's Lane, have an old cottage, built by one of the earliest settlers.. Neich homestead is next to me.. I know Tyne St quite well... dead end! I have a number of good books on this area, but always interested in others, Three Mile Bush.. met the author, he died last year.. Carterton by Bagnell.. love doing the history of this area and a 50 mile radius which includes Featherston Military Cemetery! Thanks for your welcomes..

Well if you draw your curtains you will find that it is actually less dark in the south than in the north - one of the things that struck me when I first visited this area in 1978 was the extended twilight compared to that unnamed metropolis just north of the Bombay Hills.
Hope you enjoy B-G which is enlightening 24-7.

Of course the opposite is true in winter but by then we are all busy logged onto B-G aren't we!
