Is anyone researching the names of Wardrop or Stockley in the areas of Portsea and Southampton? Some male Wardrops were ships engineers and the family had moved down from Grenock in Renfrewshire by the mid 1800s. The Stockleys appear to have lived in Portsea for several generations. Jane Wardrop married Thomas Stockley.
I would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in these names.:)

Stephanie,
I am researching the following Wardrop family in Southampton.
1871 UK Census;; Southampton, Hampshire, ENG -
James 56, engineer, West Mins, SCO
Mary, 53, spouse, Berwick-upon-Tweed, NTD, ENG
James (Hamilton) 20, son, civil engineer, Glasgow, SCO
Barbara (Robertson) 18, dau, -, Southampton, ENG
Walter, 15, son, engineer apprentice, ditto
Alexander, 12, son, scholar, ditto
resided 13 Campbell Street
1881 UK Census;; Southampton, Hampshire, ENG; folio 1207/28, pg 48
James Wardrop, 64, Scotland, engine fitter at works
Mary Wardrop, 63, Berwick-upon-Tweed
Barbara Wardrip, 28, Soton, Hampshire, shirtmaker
It appears that James had a brother or cousin Walter living in Southhampton and also in the same occupation. Walter was married to a Jane. LDS records shows a Walter Wardrop marrying a Jean Kelly in Glasgow.
James Wardrop married Mary Mowatt, 7 February, 1841 in Glasgow. I have not found them on the 1841 census yet. It seems that you are connected to the Walter married to a Jean Kelly in 1838 in Glasgow. It looks like your Jane was living in London by 1881 with her two unmarried sons, Walter and James H. NOTE: The ancestor I am tracing is also James H(amilton) and this leads me to believe that they are more likely brothers.
I too, am very curious as to what happened to these families. Have you learned anything new since you posted your msg?
