Hi
Some time ago I received the birth certificate of Catherine Bond b.15th December 1869 district of Shortland Auckland?. Her fathers name is given as James Bond, her mother's Elizabeth Bond - formerly Ritaud/Riland/Rilaud or any combination of these letters.

Catherine Bond's marriage cert printout to Jacob Marshall (6th october 1891) her birthplace is recorded as Thames, her mother's name looks like Rentil (the T has a loop and isn't crossed) Reulil ? Reutil.

(On Jacob Marshall's death cert ; Archers Road Glenfield) (1940) - says he married in Otahuhu)

Despite trawling through marriage indexes and using many variations of the letters I can find no trace of a marriage between a James Bond and an Elizabeth, however I have found several births with parents recorded as James and Elizabeth Bond.

On Catherine's marriage cert James Bond's (father) occupation is Blacksmith and doesn't say 'settler' so it appears that he at least was born in NZ.

So what? I hear you ask :(

My question is Who was Catherine Bond's mother, Elizabeth wife of James Bond Blacksmith?

I would really appreciate some advice on how to go about identifying her, until I do I am stuck :(

Thank you, regards
Linda

Little confused... I thought that you know that Catherines mother is Elizabeth wife of James.
What you are struggling with is Elizabeth's maiden name??

Will look into next weekend. I've searched the online NZ BDM and nothing close to Rentil? comes up. Just to clarify, did they marry in NZ??

Ping....possible match. What year is on the marriage certificate???
NZMarriages CD NZSG has a James Curtis BOND & Elizabeth HOLT marrying 1861 unfortunately this is nothing like Rentil.
After you give me the year I will check the Fische's at the library to see if I get a clearer name if this is not her.

Thank you for your trouble, however, It is her daughter Catherine Bond who's marriage certificate I have not Elizabeth's. Once I know her name I can send for it. The alternative is to send for marriage certs for all the James Bonds' of which there are about 5 :(
I have no idea where she came from or where she was married.
Would her maiden name be on her death certificate if I can guess when she died? I have found an Elizabeth Bond died 12 November 1913 (b1825) buried at O'Neils Point? Row C plot 67.
I really am grateful for your trouble
Regards
Linda

No probs. This will answer your question
After 1875, things improve for anyone tracing family history, as death certificates became very full. As well as the information above, the certificate now contained the cause of death, the duration of the last illness, the name of the doctor and when he last saw the person, as well as the name of the deceased's father and mother (including her maiden name), when and where the deceased was buried and even the name and religion of the minister or witness. However, some of the most important new facts for a genealogist are how long the deceased had been in New Zealand, where he was born, where he'd married (including to whom and at what age) and the number and sex of the children. You can find plenty there to spur on your research in several different directions.

In 1912 the death certificate was amended yet again, adding the deceased's place of residence, how long had elapsed between the start of the final illness and death, and the widow's age (if she was still alive).
At only NZ$20 converted to Pounds its an affordable guess.
Give me the until the weekend, I'll visit the library and look for a burial inscription. Hopefull it'll mention the daughter

Looking at the O'Neils Point data we have
Eliz Bond 1 d.1938 age 79 calc birth = 1859
Eliz Bond 2 d.1913 age 88 calc birth = 1825

If daughter Catherine born 1869, Eliz1 aged 10 & Eliz2 aged 44. Little bit older than I would have liked.
Did James & Elizabeth have any more children?

Can you scan & email me the (signature part) of the certificate in high resolution. Maybe I can get a better fix on the maiden name.
