Today I had a tour of the new Glamorgan Archive building. All the records have been transferred (all now on site with purpose built storage areas) but there is still some delay on the fixtures and fittings for the search room and the installation of computers etc. The current estimate is for an opening date of late February, but those interested should keep checking for updates on their website.

It was fascinating to see the areas where they do restoration of old maps and documents, and the 'cleaning room' where they deal with incoming records, and often have to get rid of insect infestation first!

The old facsimile copies of the parish registers will no longer be on open shelves in the new search room. The registers have been digitised and access will be via computer terminals. Ancestry access is free. The catalogue is also being digitised and will eventually be on the website so that documents can be ordered in advance online with a reader's ticket. You will need a new reader's ticket - I got mine today - your picture will be taken for their computer but the actual ticket just has a bar code and membership number.

Elaine - they should definitely be open by March |biggrin|

Thanks Sue. I'll be sure my hair looks OK when I go so I will look good in the photo |biggrin|

OH, kewl! I wish I had research there - ooh, ooh My cousin took photographs of the admissions book for the industrial school last time but they were blurry. We could go again couldn't we and take better pics - i'll do it because he has shakey hands. Oh, I hope they still let people take pics.
I can't wait for Gwent to get their new record office - in Ebbw Vale - that will be a lovely place and there should be rail access right to the door, well about 50 yards away.
