Looking for James PETERS born c1807. He is on the 1871 census b. Henfield and on the 1881 census, Head (but all alone), Ag. Lab., born Henfield, living New Row, Steyning, Sussex.

He is believed to have married either Ann Tonsett at Woodmancote near Hurstpierpoint or Ann Clark at West Stoke. He is the father of Esther PETERS b. 1831 at Beeding. He was a farrier at this time.

Would love to hear from anyone having knowledge of this man or this family.

Hi there

Have just had a browse through the 1861 census for Henfield for your James Peters, but without success I am afraid.

Will have a look through the 1841 for Beeding a little later on - being as his daughter Esther was born there in 1831, there is a good possibility that he could be there

Hi Chris:

Thank you for your time.

I have just finished looking at the 1871 census page again and he is living on New Row, Steyning. The same house as in 1881. He is an Ag. Lab. there too.

Do you think he lived in Steyning all along? Would a lookup on the 1861 census for Steyning be appropriate?

Also, if, despite being born in Henfield, he lived all his life in Steyning, could you have a boo at t3C/P>

Hi again

Of the two marriages that you have for a James Peters with an Ann in 1829, I have a gut feeling that this is the one you want.

Marriage:
Place: Woodmancote, West Sussex, Date: 3 Jun 1829:
Groom: James PETERS, bachelor
Bride: Ann TOMSETT,
Both of this Parish, Married by Banns.
Witnessed by Sarah & Peter GROVES

Incidentally, there are 3 seperate Groves families living within a few houses of James & Ann, all of the Heads are Ag Labs, but unfortunately not a Sarah or Peter amongst them.

Its him again

Hi, found them in the 1861 census for Steyning

RG9/ 606/ Folio 51/ Page 21 - Norfolk Row, Steyning

PETERS James, Head, Marr, 55, Ag Lab, born Henfield, Sussex
........ Ann, Wife, Marr, 50, born Woodmancote, Sussex
........ Edward, Son, Unm, 21, Bricklayers Labourer, born Steyning
........ William, Son, Unm, 17, ag Lab, born Steyning
........ Charlotte, Dau, Unm, 13, Scholar, born Steyning

As Ann is shown as being born in Woodmancote, that is the place she would have married, so I think that virtually confirms which wife is the correct one.

Its now a case of confirming with the Parish Registers.

Hope That has helped your research

Chris: I cannot thank you enough for all that wonderful information. At last! I never thought I would get here. I am so excited. Now I can spread the news to a couple of other PETERS researchers (sadly, not related).

Just a quick thought: Huddlestone? Would this be a town/village within the Steyning registration district or an area (suburb) of the town of Steyning AT THAT TIME?

Your friend for life

Hi there June

Glad you liked all that info - was pretty chuffed myself finding it.

Looking at the census, Huddlestone (my interpretation of what was written; its the 'Hu' that is in doubt) and what was written before and after the James Peters entry, it looked to be the name of a house rather than an area or district within Steyning.

I am glad that we were able to further your research and If you need any further help in the future, then you know where to find me
