Hi all.
I've just started out and have got back to 1805 on my dads side so far. I need help on how to get back further. Are there any sites with earlier census records before 1881?
I'm waiting for the birth cert from 1805 but apart from that I need help!

It depends on where [geographically] you are looking and whether you're willing to pay for the information or not. Why don't you tell us a little about who you're looking for -- names, dates and places of birth, spouses, children, etc. Someone may be able to help you. ;)

Hi Er
One site you could have a look at is Ancestry. This is a subscription site i.e. you have to pay an annual fee, and once subscribed it is alleged to be very difficult to un-subscribe. However, it also offers free trial periods, so in theory you could milk its current databases and then unsubscribe before they take your money. You need to keep a careful record of how to unsubscribe when you do the free trial and then make sure you remember the dates. It is being updated all the time which is another hook they use to retain membership so if you do leave you'll miss updates.
If you are just looking at UK people you could subscribe to the UK package only which has the 1871-1901 censuses on. These are not complete - although they say they are (they do not include workhouse inmates in the 1901 census for example). Other listers are quite rude about A-com but if you use it recognising its strengths and weaknesses it will be helpful, particularly as it has images of census pages.
Another source apart from Local County Record Offices are the many local Family History Societies who transcribe info for their areas. Membership is usually very cheap.
If you look through the threads on this board over time - going backwards even - you will find that the numerous experts who also subscribe have disclosed a wealth of excellent advice and their good and bad experiences. You'll learn loads from them. You will also have a laugh at how indignant some of the listers become in defence of their positions - all in the best of humour of course (although sometimes I wonder!)
Finally and by no means least you will already be aware that this board is provided courtesy of Rod Neep and Archive CD Books...the premier source of high quality scanned family history...over to you Rod!

Have you looked at the IGI at www.familysearch.org (http://www.familysearch.org/)? There appears to be a wealth of information on your Charlotte and Henry...
Potential children for Henry and Charlotte include: Henry William 1830, Henry James 1837, Thomas Allen 1836. All Stepney. Could be more...
Potential birthdates for Charlotte and siblings: Mary 1796, Emily Elizth 1797, Charlotte Mrgt. 1799; John Willm. 1802, Henry 1803, Wm. 1805, Louisa Henrietta 1810, Sophia Matilda 1811. All St. Marylebone. Could be more...
Potential birth, death and marriage for John GAGE: 1767-1846; parents Hon. Thomas GAGE and Margaret KEMBLE; 1793 married Mary MILBANKE [born 1770].
Apparently someone else -- a member of the LDS Church -- is also researching your GAGE family which may make your work a lot easier.
HTH,
Trish

Thanks Trish, I did actually find the Hon Thomas Gage etc the other day but wasn't too sure if I was just plucking names out or whether it could actually be a relation.
