My Great grandfather James Nutt became bankrupt in 1890 I have some earlier debtors letters and court papers but wondered if I could find out any other information

I have tried the local papers but no joy although I did find in the London Gazette a one line mention saying where the court case was held

Hi Helen, and welcome to the forums |wave|

There's relatively little detailed documentation for bankruptcy at this date. What there is is at the National Archives, and you would need to visit. Have a look at this research guide (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=146), especially paragraph 4 onwards.

Another possibility might be any surviving archives of the solicitors who handled the case, especially if they were local.

You could also try checking The Times online, which you didn't mention.

Many thanks

Pity we didn't discover James was bankrupt before as we visited the archives before Christmas |banghead|

The solicitors are no longer in existence so no joy there

I have just tried a search on line at the archives and no joy

Will try the Times on line maybe more luck there

The link you gave was great by the way thank you

If I'm looking at the same entry in the London Gazette - Issue 26080 page 4566 (http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/26080/pages/4566) then I notice he was a farmer. Are there any notices in the local record office (a bit closer to you than Kew) regarding the sale of farm property - or was the lease for the farm advertised? Notices may detail property to be sold (in effect an inventory of the farm) and the size of the farm. Notices should appear in local newspapers.

Yep same entry

It was and still is a blink and miss it place

I have tried the local papers up to December 1890 looking at local auctions and nothing so far

The local record office is Lincoln but the court case was at Grimsby then I have debtors court letters for Leeds and Wakefield so four different archives I think

On the searches I have done for the Nutt family I have also found records held at the Treasure House in Beverley

We are right on the border of Lincolnshire and Yorkshire so the records end up at at least three archievs so maybe another trip to Kew it will have to be as going to all the various archives might take as long to do
