Hot off the press and further to my Innes post dated 4 Jan ....
HOPKIN(S) - AYERS
I have been told that all business activity was conducted under the name HOPKIN(S). Mary Hopkin(s) was my G Grandmother and married to George Alexander INNES. He apparently absconded from a London based apprenticeship in the 1860s, was re-united with it by his parents before he severed all contacts with both employer and parents. A family source says he adopted a travelling life in order to prevent contact from them. (Kids !!!)
Mary was a very tall Welsh lady who was prone to reverting to her native tongue during arguments. A formidable lady by all accounts. It seems she may have retained some interest in the family business until her death in 1946 at the age of 90 yrs. At that time she lived in Wolvey with my G Uncle and Aunt, Alfred and Mercy INNES.
Perhaps the most pressing reason for anonymity related to my grandfather William Ratcliffe INNES. He married a Florence AYRES at Nuneaton in 1904. She was apparently from a local travelling family. They had a daughter Ruth who was registered in Edmonton in 1905. There may have been other children. William abandonned them. I don't know the circumstances but they were clearly not happy ones. By 1911 William is in his parent's living van at Higham, Hinckley/Nuneaton. About 1913 he met my Grandmother Emily Green (probably in Leicester) and lived with her until his death in the 1960s. They got married at Nuneaton in 1949 and, although they had a settled address in Hinckley, the Marriage Certificate gives their address as Fairground Nuneaton.
Does any of this mean anything to anyone?? Best wishes ~ Susan
