I am trying to track down a John Allen and his parents to see if I can
link up 2 families. In 1861 John Allen would be about 19, he was born
in Bridport Dorset and became a boot and shoe maker. His mother was
Bethia Allen (but often seen as Bertha), born in Dorset around 1812.
According to her death certificate her husband was William Allen a
lawyer. In the 1871 census I have a William and Bertha Allen living in
Ryde, Isle of Wight (and in fact John Allen lived on the Isle of Wight
too), but William's occupation is a grocer - rather far removed from a
lawyer. John Allen and his family are in Portsea.
If I can find William and Bertha and son John in the 1861 census to
confirm they are the same family I would be very happy!
