1891 census Launceston - Graham-white

Hello Folks,

I just discovered that one of my gf's brothers-in-law probably came from Cornwall.

Could somebody please look in the 1891 census of Launceston for the 35-year-old solicitor George Graham White.

George was born in Launceston and was possibly recorded as George White - as he is in the 1901 census.

I expect/hope to find an 8 year-old son - Edwin or Eustace. This man was known to my late father as E.W.C. Graham-White.

Further to what I just gave you, Justin:

There are no young boys named Eustace WHITE in Cornwall in 1891 at all -- at least, none that pop up in a search. There is one Edwin WHITE, 8 years old, but he is living with his parents, John [a woodsman] and Maria in Perranzabuloe, Cornwall.

Margaret Annie White's maiden name was Michell. I have been told that there is a 7 year-old William White with his Michell grandparents in Kenwyn, Truro in 1891.

Maybe this is the elusive great-unlce? He is recorded as E. White, 18, b. in Truro, student mining engineer in Camborne in 1901. I do not know whether any further initials were given.

All a bit of a mystery.

Sorry about the repeating text in my previous message [and if it happens again in this one]. You do seem to be on the right track. Edwin William WHITE was born in the last quarter of 1883 which means he would be not yet 8 in the 1891 census. Too bad you don't know who his parents were...

Do you have the 1871 census information on the MICHELL family?

Most important is the full entry in 1891 - William G White. The G most probably stands for Graham, as with his father's entry.

As for the missing first names, that seems to have been all too common in those days. Both my maternal grandfather and his brother were recorded incorrectly in 1901, i.e. they were recorded by the names that they were usually called, which were not their first christian names.

Are you able to check the 1901 census for free?

JustinYou're right -- the problems with "unreliable" first names on censuses were not uncommon. It can really complicate matters when you're looking for an ancestor who might have been christened Elizabeth Ann, for example, but was called Lizzie and/or Eliza and/or Betty and/or Annie at different stages of her life.



The 1901 census is available online and is searchable free of charge at http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/. It's also available -- and easier to search -- through ancestry for a subscription fee.

I have just found out that the entry for E. White in 1901 reads:

E.W.C. Gra. White

That's my great-uncle!
