View Full Version : Parish Chest and Brit-Gen at WDYTYA 2010

Erm..... just a wee bit nervous at the moment, but I thought that you would all like advance warning that I will be a speaker at the Who Do You Think You Are? event at Olympia in February.
My slot is the last of the event on Sunday 28th February 2010, from 16:10 to 16:55 and entitled "From Riddles to Riches". This will tell the story of how the riddle of my Great Grandmother's tapestry and the fibs told by my Grandmother led to the riches that I have found with Parish Chest and Brit-Gen.
This is supposing that the voice still works after 3 days of talking.... :o

I'm sure you will be tremendous Jan :D I wish I could afford a plane ticket!
I would rather go and listen to Jan and her real genealogy tale than listen to some "famous name" from the telly telling all about fairy tale world of WDYTYA programs and how we can all just walk into a parish church and see the original records there all laid out nicely (no appointment needed of course!) ;)

I echo Mark.
I hope you will write it all out afterwards and put it on here so that those of us who cannot get to the venue in Feb will be able to enjoy it too.

A booklet about the event came with my WDYTYA magazine and I am so envious of all the lucky peole who will be there - I can only be with you in spirit.
Jan - I have done some public speaking from a group of 12 to over 400. That was to an annual area meeting of the WI when I found from the Chairwoman's introduction that the speaker the previous year had been the Duchess (now Dowager Duchess) of Devonshire. Follow that. The Chairwoman sat down, I stood up in a state of shock supporting myself on the table, thought about either fainting or going home, took a couple of deep breaths, opened my mouth but nothing came out .............. Panic !!! A lady on the front row smiled at me and nodded which brought me down to earth. Fortunately I knew my subject and I was away.
Jan - I wish you all the luck in the world, you will do splendidly, and yes, a video or recording would be brilliant.

I will have to wait until I get my duties for that week before I can commit to coming down to London. Fingers crossed, I will come on the Sunday.
I look foward to seeing everyone again. If not April 17th in Gloucester for all those who want to come along. I expect Bo will post more info closer to the date.

I know full well that rail travel in Kent is no great shakes but it isn't that bad surely. National Rail Enquiries says there's one an hour on Sundays from Herne Bay.

I’ve only just seen this, and I somehow think friends in Muswell Hill may end up with me as a guest that weekend. It sounds simply too good to miss!
I am particularly interested in my Cheshire and Norfolk ancestors. Will there be any groups there who can help?
I do hope there will be other members of this forum there. Who else will be attending? It would be wonderful to put faces to names!

That maybe so, but Sunday is the day for engineering works and I am told I will have to go via Dover Priory to get to London, I am now thinking it will be easier to drive to Ashford and get the high speed service.

The Daft Bat will be there, so bring your ear defenders!|biggrin| Should I save you a ticket?
Bo Peep, that‘s wonderfully considerate of you, but I really had better decline your kind offer!
If something happened at the last minute and I was unable to attend ( transport problems, or I have found myself without a cat sitter before now!) I wouldn’t forgive myself if I thought I had deprived another person of a ticket.
Thank you though, it really is very good and kind of you!

Hi Pam
Bit of a cheek as I haven't used the Brit Gen site for ages, but have recently begun receiving the Parish Chest newsletter again which has re-kindled my interest. Would be very interested in 2 tickets for WDYTYA if you still have any available.

Saturday is going to have a Welsh theme to it so please find time to pop over to the Gwent FHS stand. Just say hello to Malcolm, Clare, Ellen Geoff or Pat and tell them you were asked to say hello by Ann on British-Genealogy. This will help to convince them that having a Society forum on Brit-Gen is a GOOD THING. Then when you go to Brit-Gen's stand you can give Jan a hug from me please.

Anyone planning to go by tube should bear in mind that on Saturday and Sunday there's no Circle Line at all and no Central Line west of Marble Arch.
While this doesn't directly affect Kensington Olympia station, it may affect your route getting there.
Map of planned closures here (http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/livetravelnews/realtime/by-date.aspx?offset=weekend) (pdf file)
The situation may change before the weekend, for better or worse, so it's worth checking again nearer the time.

Wouldn't be so bad if I could help him with his family tree, but I understand he has Irish ancestors, and my knowledge of Ireland is limited to the fact that it's basically west of the British mainland. |dunce2|

(Totally off-topic - I am |jumphappy as I have a front row seat to see him at the Cadogan Hall at the end of March. If you think I'm bonkers now, I'll be a jibbering wreck for at least a week after seeing Tim! :biggrin5: )

What a tiring but very enjoyable day out. It was great to meet and chat with Pam, Frank and Jan (my ears are ok) and get my lovely BritGen badge. Thanks Pam for sorting out my email/PM query. Sorry I missed the other BG’ers. Meeting Mutley, who was with her daughter Chocolate, was a bonus. I hope you managed to find some earmuffs Mutters and that the grandchildren’s hamster survived unscathed.
During the day I met some very friendly folk but came across a couple of pretentious, precious types. One woman told me she had traced her line back to William the Conqueror ‘apart from a couple of missing links.’ Surprisingly, I also met people who had never heard of BritGen :yikes: so of course I had to give details and directions to the rather splendid stand.
Well done Pam & Co. |grouphug|I don’t envy you spending three days on your feet though. Mine plus knees (hi PamD!) were complaining by the end of the day. Thank goodness the train took the strain for a couple of hours although I was worried I’d nod off and end up in Leeds.

Well what a fantastic day. Met Bo and Daft Bat (got my badge and still wearing it proudly). My mum was so impressed with the site that she will be joining (when she eventually gets round to it!) and I was amazed that even she couldn't get a word in with Daft Bat - boy Jan can talk!(lol)
Don't know how Jan, Peter and Bo are managing to keep going for three days on their feet, mine were killing me when we got home but that might have had something to do with being dragged to East Finchley Cemetery after we left the show. I ended up doing my Indiana Jones impression in the undergrowth looking for my great grandfathers grave (couldn't find it) but still enjoyed myself.
Bo, Jan and Peter hope you enjoy the rest of the weekend and I hope Jans voice is in fine fettle for tomorrow's talk - wish I could be there for that one.
Now I think the BG members should have a whip round and send all three off for a nice little break to rest weary bones etc after all this is over.|grouphug|

Ah, you have to be more explicit when you talk to Jan1954, she needs you to say stuff like "I am a Brit-Gen member, I joined in (insert year) I claim my badge." The only way you can have heard about them is on the forum so she'll know that you are interested enough to want one.

Thanks Ladykis - I'll bear that in mind for next year - I was a 'first timer' this year and didn't know the ropes :-)

Gosh you have been busy today. By the sound of it, you have justified having a stand at the event.
Congrats to Guy on his award. Speaking of awards, do I take it that BritGen didn't win anything? :frown5:
Not long to go now Jan. I'm looking forward to the post talk report.

I got home about half an hour ago, and would just like to say that Jan's talk went very well - an ideal mixture of serious research and jocularity that had me in stitches. I'm just off to look up Uncle Albert at the bottom of the garden.
Oh, and the rest of the exhibition was good, too! My friend and I have volunteered to record the gravestones at our local church.

Well, I am home now and utterly exhausted. My feet no longer belong to me and I have nearly (but not quite :wink5:) lost my voice. I have met so many members and it was great to put faces to names.
Hopefully, there should be some more new folk joining this happy forum, so we shall have to wait and see over the next few days.
It has been a fantastic show and we were kept busy virtually all of the time.
Thank you all for your good wishes for our success at WDYTYA - both Brit-Gen and Parish Chest and........
....... we have booked for next year! :hurray:
Hey Jan,
I loved the talk and I've just tried looking up Uncle Albert at the bottom of the garden but about 4 pages of results came up! I'm typing this while trying to keep the cats off the keyboard :-) and cook my supper so can I be very lazy and ask for a link to the thread.......?

We've made it home after picking Perdi (the dog) up from mum and dad's. Had a great but tiring day and the first thing I did when I got in was put the kettle on.
It was great to meet Bo and Jan and I thoroughly enjoyed Jan's talk. Like Thomasin, I am going to toddle off to find Jan's Great Uncle Albert at the bottom of the garden.

Sorry I've been tied up most of the weekend, but have had quick looks at the posts to see how it has all been going. From what I have read, it appears to have been an outright success and I am so pleased for BG. You must be well pleased Bo, and from the comments Jan appears to have won the crowd over with her talk. I must take a look a look at the bottom of the garden also. ;)
Congratulations everyone. :hurray:

Hi all,
HUGE congratulations Guy on that brilliant award - I had a look at the photo you linked to, its really nice and should look really good on a mantelpiece! Its well-deserved too.
We went to the show on the Saturday but didn't manage to chat to anyone on the B-G or PC stands - we tried a couple of times but it was so busy every time we got near it, and we couldn't wait as we had lectures booked all day, plus an Ask the Expert session, and several of the stands we wanted to help us with some research... We had to leave early too as my cough was getting out of control and we were exhausted! I'm sad not to have 'met' any forumeers but hopefully next year.
Congratulations to everyone who ran the stands, and Jan for your talk - sounds like it was a huge success!!
Love,

I am now back home also, safe and sound and thank goodness Portugal missed the hurricane!
There were quite a few members that I was able to meet but sadly lots of people that I missed, it just seemed to be so difficult to do everything.
Peter Goody is quite unaware that a stupid mut, a daft bat and some chocolate chased him down the road outside Olympia but he had gone, disappeared in a puff of smoke!
I spent a lot of the day peering at people's chests looking for the Brit Gen badges and I suspect other members did the same.
Did I stand behind you in the long queues trying to get a cuppa?
Was I beside you around one of the very busy of the stands?
Could you have been the person sitting next to me in a lecture?
Did I tread on your toe somewhere there or shove you with one of my many carrier bags?
Maybe we were on the tube together?
We will never know but next year I shall organise a competition, a really simple competition ;)
How can we recognise each other. You have a whole year to think about it because I think that most of us will want to
do it all over again. :hurray:

Hi Mutley - I was lucky enough to be one of those who met you on Friday at the Brit-Gen stand. Was just checking forum and wondered at first why it had taken you so long to get home !! Only then noticed the "Sunny Algarve"
Like the idea of something to bring attention to ourselves - I fear the Brit Gen badges were not big enough on their own and red carnation has been a trifle overdone. Maybe T shirts, baseball caps, sweatshirts ??!!!!! oops got a bit carried away sorry. Still as you say we have a year to think about it. Nice meeting you

I have to admit that the first thing more obvious than a badge that came to my mind was those paper/cardboard baseball caps. Don't know if anyone else at the big fairs does them. If so, you'd need to to look at what colours the other people tend to use, and then choose something different but tasteful. :biggrin5: The big advantage is that you see a 'hat' coming towards you, but the problem is - would we all be prepared to wear one?
You could have a carrier bag, but that could easily get 'lost' amongst all the other bags you get given/take with you. Plus, in the general crush, you wouldn't see a bag so easily.

But short of saying 'we'll all meet at the BG stand at 1 o'clock', you are unlikely to be able to pick out one face in the crowd as people walk round the show. If you have something distinctive about your person (e.g. a badge or a hat as we can't all have sideburns!:biggrin5:) then you have something to alert you to a fellow forumer.

Hi all,
My vote is for a proper baseball cap, with the B-G logo on it. T-shirts are subject to people's individual thermostat so might be covered up with a jumper if they are cold. Bags aren't easy to see at eye-level, and umbrellas shouldn't really be up inside lol, badges don't always stick out. The other benefit of a baseball cap is that it can be worn by men or women, and isn't dependent on size or shape etc. I think it would be a good way of advertising too!
They would have to be printed by someone and might cost between £5 and £10 - but what an investment and how much fun?!

I vote for bagging a corner - there must be a few young uns amongst us who could hoist us oldies up and down from the floor surely. Also, quite like Pam's idea of all meeting at one time - sort of a flash mob !!! That would certainly bring attention to the stand but not sure Pam could afford to supply the choccie biscuits for that. I realise that having jokingly suggested baseball caps that I look really stupid in any headgear....oh well.... :hat: :hat:.....oooh look right colours too
