Hi everyone.
Ive hit a stumbling block on my William Gittins 1819-1889.
Hes the son of William (1784) & Ann(1784) Gittins.
He was born abt 1819 and got married 1840 to Eleanor Williams and became a widow in 1852 ...BUT between the 1871 & 1881 Cencus he remarried to a Mary ?. Theres no mention of a wife on 1871 but shes there 1881 it says shes born abt 1818 Lea Bridge , Shropshire . On the 1881 cencus they are living 20 Hargate Lane , Wednesbury ,Staffordshire . They are aged arround 61 at the time .Mary Gittins dies in 1888 (West Bromwich District ).
I would like to know when they got married and Mary's surname before marriage but theres so many William Gittins/Gittings/Gittens getting married in that 10 year period to Mary's , that i carnt fathum out !.

Hi,

if you look at westmidlandsbmd - and put in William Gittins and Mary then you get a

William GITTINS marrying a Mary HORTON in 1881 at St Bartholomew, Wednesbury.

If you click on the ref number and then from the summary page click on it again - you can print out a form to send to Sandwell to order the certificate.

I hope this is the one you are looking for

I'm not sure about that.

On FreeBMD, if you restrict the search to West Bromwich, switch surname phonetic search ON, exact match forenames ON and enter spouse's forename as Mary, there's just one possible marriage in March 1881.

Even if you broaden the search to the whole of Staffordshire, there's still only one!

If you work on the basis that you're sure about William's forenames but not Mary's, there are still only three in the county.

The marriage that Shezzy found for you could well be the correct one. According to the 1881 census record Mary GITTINS was born c1818 at Lea Bridge, Shropshire. Looking for a Mary HORTON born c1818 Shropshire in the 1871 census, I came up with this one in Kinlet:

RG10/2739, folio 31, page 6
Cottage

George HORTON Head Mar 65 Ag Lab Salop Kinlet
Mary do Wife Mar 51 do Highley
Henry do Son Unm 31 Ag Lab Worcestershire Rock
Matthew do Son Unm 17 do do do

There is a death registration for a George HORTON in the September qtr 1873 at Cleobury Mortimer reg district (contains the parish of Kinlet), vol 6a, page 347, aged 69. I cannot find a death registration for a Mary HORTON in Cleobury Mortimer reg district between 1871 & 1881 and nor can I find this Mary HORTON in the 1881 census.

I can't find a Lea Bridge in Shropshire but Highley is very close to the River Severn and some of its tributaries so perhaps her place of birth in the 1881 census should be Ley Bridge part of Highley?? I don't know Shropshire at all so this is only an educated guess.

HTH further,

Janet
