I see on the Forum info pages that godparents were not recorded in Church of England registers. Some questions:
1) There were godparents, right? Or sponsors?
2) I found some info on the web (provided by Guy Etchells) including this: "Cardinal Pole required the names of sponsors to be added to the register of baptisms 1555." He (and Mary) didn't last long after that, but did anyone obey for a year or two? (What did go on in local parishes during Mary's reign? Reading lists or websites welcomed.)
3) Can anyone tell me whether the 17th century church in Scotland had godparents or sponsors at baptisms? I ask because my allegedly Scottish ancestor in NY had a string of children baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church with never a sponsor. (Frustrating, as the names of sponsors are a wonderful tool for sorting out identities and relationships.)
