Good morning ... my first post with the exception of the intro thread, so I hope I am in the right place. It is a long time since I have done any research and am not up to date on what is available now so here is the question ... |help|where, if anywhere at all, are staff records available for the Taff Vale Railway?

Our ggg-grandfather, William Stockwood, according to the birth records of his children and census data, was with the Taff Vale from some time in between 1841 and 1848 until his death in 1876. He progressed from 'railway labourer' (1848) to 'clerk, Taff Vale'(1851) & 'stationmaster' (1856,1861,1871). The family moved from Cardiff to Pentyrch Station - I have long made the assumption |blush| that since they lived at this last, that he was stationmaster at the same location, but I would love to know for sure. In 1871 their place of residence was Walnut Tree Cottage, Eglwysilan and he is still listed as stationmaster.

In the past I have been informed that Pentyrch Station was closed at some point and that the duties were transferred to Radyr - our ggg-grandmother died in Radyr in 1879, so this might make sense.

Sorry for being long-winded when all I was really asking was if there are records available to anyone's knowledge?

Thank you
Helen :)

Eglwysilan is basically what we call Taff's Well today.

Walnut Tree Junction was adjacent to Taff's Well station on the TVR line from Cardiff to Merthyr. My husband is a signalman and did part of his training at Walnut Tree, but alas the box is no more. He did take its picture before it was demolished :)

You will also find some nice pictures of the area here (http://www.roscalen.com/signals/WalnutTreeJct/index.htm).

Hello Sue (I think I have seen you on the Glamlist?? :)) ~ thank you for the links to the pictures. I did visit the area several years ago but at the time had Pentyrch at the top of my list .... unfortunately on that visit our time in Wales was limited.

Hello Sue (I think I have seen you on the Glamlist?? :))

If you're a member of Glamorgan FHS you probably used to send me your money :). I was membership secretary for 15 years! These days I'm mostly on Brit-Gen.

Hi

the railway line through here has been transformed into a pedestrian / cycle route, fairly well used, with links to a larger cycle scheme (Taff Trail).

The name Walnut Tree is still used, and I believe the cottages still exist now.

I did have some photo's on the computer of the area about 5 years ago, unfortunately lost now. If the cottages are the ones I remember they actually front onto the disued railway line in the vicinity of the old station.

Some history of the area:

It might be accurate for this enquiry, but in case someone else takes your comment too literally.... Eglwysilan is a much bigger parish than just Taffs Well and continued up the east bank of the Taff to the southern outskirts of Pontypridd, including Upper Boat, Hawthorn, Rhydyfelin and part of Treforest. The church itself is nowhere near any of these, being on top of a hillside between the Taff Valley and the next east. I recollect it had a country pub next door and lots of memorials to victims of the Senghenydd colliery distaster.
