The Johnson Family
I desperately need help tracing distant family ties with Hartlepool and I'm especially interested to hear from anyone with the surnames: Johnson, Cansfield, Smurthwaite and Bramley.
The story:
After growing up in the Island of Guernsey (Channel Islands) I recently discovered that the genealogical roots on my fathers side of my family originate from Hartlepool (West). My Grandfather Roy William Johnson death certificate states that he was born in West Hartlepool and is the son of Harry Johnson and Mary Johnson (nee Cansfield).
After an online search of The Tees Valley Indexes I have established that Harry and Mary were married in 1909 which is approximately 10 years before the birth of their son Roy in 1919. I know Roy had brothers (probably one called Harry) and I have also been told that one or more of them died in WW2. I'm not sure if Roy had any sisters, though it is extremely likely, given the gap between the marriage of his parents and his year of birth?
I would speculate that my branch of the Johnson family ended up in Guernsey due to WW2. My Grandfather Roy met and married my Grandmother Lily Amelia Caroline Mitchell in a concentration camp in Germany Biberach during the German occupation of Guernsey (30/06/1940 - 09/05/1945), where Lily gave birth to their very first child Janet.
Have you heard of The Johnson Nose?
I apparently escaped this one and inherited my mothers conk but my father has quite a large nose which he refers to as being cursed with the Johnson nose. I know this is a long shot but perhaps there is some science to this and the curse of having a big conk has been passed down other branches (if any survived) of the Johnson family tree?
Logical Branch:

Logical Branch:
After studying Census records from 1871-1901 I currently believe that Harry Johnson (born circa 1885 West Hartlepool) is my great grandfather and could possibly be the son of Thomas Johnson (born Manchester circa 1853) who married Jane E Smurthwaite (born West Hartlepool circa 1859). I also think that Jane E Smurthwaite descended from Davison Smurthwaite (born circa 1835 Billingham, Durham) and Jane E Smurthwaite (born circa 1832 Ayton, Yorkshire). I also believe that Mary Cansfield (born circa 1887, Hartlepool) is my great grandmother and that she descended from John Cansfield (born circa 1860, West Carnforth, Yorkshire) and Mary Cansfield, nee Bramley (born circa 1860 Stockton-on-Tees, Durham). As Jonas Cansfield (born circa 1831 Bradford, Yorkshire) died in Hartlepool in 1891, who was married to another Hartlepool Mary (born circa 1833) it is also likely that these last two individuals would have been my great, great, great, grandparents?
Can you help?
I may have my logical branch all wrong but I would love to hear from anyone who can disprove or validate all/partial info in my logical branch or advise me on further sources of research? I can't wait until the release of the 1911 Census! I would also love to hear from any distant or not so distant relatives who think they can add a branch to the tree, no matter how tedious the link!! As fate would have it I moved to Newcastle upon Tyne 5 years ago and have started a family up here, though I have only just discovered my ties to Hartlepool. I'm now the butt of many Geordie jokes btw :o
