HOBBS family in early 1800's

My latest brick walls concern my gggrandfather and my ggggrandfathers both named John HOBBS. From census reports my gggrandfather was born in Bristol St Peters about 1823. Using the BAFHS birth index I cannot find any reference to his birth in any parish in Bristol at that time. On his marriage certificate to Harriet KEATE, his father is listed as being John HOBBS a soap boiler.

If anyone has any information on the two John HOBBS or suggestions, I would be greatful.

I have found one on the IGI, but the spouse does not match yours, may be connected though.

The Bristol Baptism fiche you mention are all Church of England parishes. It doesn't cover non-conformists, Roman Catholics or Quakers. Also, as you know, not every child was baptised. You say that census returns give his approximate date of birth as 1823. Do you know who his mother may be? There are several John Hobbs baptised in Bristol at a later (and earlier) date - he might have been baptised as an older child... I have some ancestors being baptised as adults!

I just came across this site from google. I was very interested to see that you are also looking for 2 John Hobbs the same 2 I am looking for!
I also have a copy of the marriage cert.
John b 1823 St Peter's Bristol is my gg grandfather. My great grandmother was Sarah Jane Hobbs daughter of John and Harriet. Have you had any luck with tracking William Keate?
My side of the family did not move far ! I live in Bristol

Hi Nicky,

Since your ggrandmother Sarah Jane Hobbs is the sister of my ggrandfather Stephen Lush Hobbs we must be 3rd cousins.

I have the death certificate for William Keate and he died at the age of 96. I have also found him in the 1812 Poll book for Bristol when he lived at 9 Callowhill Street, where Stephen Lush was born.

I have been having some computer problems I sent you an email off forum. I am not sure whether you received it. Also I have not received any email for 2 days so I am not sure if I have a problem or it is my ISP's problem.

I am also interested in the Hibbs line in Bristol. One of my 3ggrandmothers was Esther HIBBS who was born 1789. She was married to Edward MACEY. I know of 2 children Edward MACEY born in 1818 and George Hibbs MACEY born 1823.

Have just seen your posting and think we may be looking along the same lines, I am tracing the Hobbs family, Charles born in 1855 married Elizabeth ( have not found any maiden name yet) Clara Louisa would be my Grandmother. I an very new to this and still trying to obtain information from my mother to verify this information. Would be please to hear of any addtional information you may have.

Hello all,
I have just started researching the Hobbs connection on my husbands side. His mother was Myrtle Hobbs b 28 dec 1931. Her father was James Dennis Hobbs. They lived in and around Fishponds, Bristol. His marriage to Charlotte Eliza V Davis was registered in Keynsham, Bristol March quarter 1931. I would like to go back further but have no more information at present.

My Charles is Charles John Hobbs. he was born on 29 May 1853 and was the son of John Hobbs and Harriet Keate. I am sorry that I do not have his wife's name. He is the brother of my ggrandfather, Stephen Lush Hobbs. I also am interested in finding out more about Charles and his family.

I do have some information on the families of some of the siblings of Charles and Stephen if you are interested.
