Are there any Catholic birth/baptism or marriage records available for Cumberland, England?

I am looking for birth/baptism details for Margaret FO(R)STER b. 1805-1811 in Carlisle. Her mother's maiden name may have been LOSH.

I am lead to believe that the family was Catholic. I can't find any non-Catholic records for her which may support that theory..

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Regards,

maggie

Hi Maggie, have you checked out the parish registers for Cumberland at Parish Chest (http://www.parishchest.com/shop/index.php?cmd=listlinkeditems&cat=D2825&breadcrumb=Parish+Registers:Cumberland)?

I have now!!

However, unless I am missing something, there doesn't seem to be any reference to Catholic registers.

Regards,

maggie

The Catholic Family History Society has transcribed many registers, but Cumberland is not among them. Failing that you need to check Michael Gandy's invaluable publications Catholic Missions and Registers 1700-1880 - a listing of all known registers, their locations (many are still with the parish priest) and the existence and locations of transcriptions.

The Catholic FHS has a strong group in NW England so it would probably be worth contacting them.

You could also try the relevant record office, it's always possible that they have a transcript.

Thank you, Colin.

I'll certainly follow up those leads.
