In the 1891 census, my great great grandad, David Dalton, is listed as being born in 'Cumberland, Chapel Knowe' (about 1853). Previously he is shown a being born in just 'Scotland'.
Does anyone know of a Chapel Knowe in Cumberland? I know there is one over the border in Dumfriesshire and am wondering if this is the same one?
Many thanks

Chapelknowe in Dumfries is only about 1.5 km from the present border with Cumberland. There doesn't appear to be a place of the same name in Cumberland, and I would suggest that it must be one and the same place.

Thanks Michael
Had a feeling it was probably the same place. Still can't find any David Dalton pre-1891!

Yes, that's them, living in Tanfield, Co. Durham. Also in Tanfield at the same time is a George Dalton (born Scotland) and I think this might be David's brother. One of my granda Edward Dalton's brothers was also a George.
I've found a David born in Half Morton, Dumfriesshire. This is near Chapelknowe so I'm pretty convinced it's him. Father appears to have been William, born Cumberland.
