Another example of what you can find in a local paper, this is from the North Devon Journal of 5th June 1858.

"Ran Away - From his Master, Mr Thomas Vickery, Edge-Tool Maker, of Swymbridge, near Barnstaple, on Tuesday last, the 27th instant.
John Bater - his Apprentice
The said John Bater is about nineteen years old, 5 feet 4 inches high, rather stout made, a little marked with the smallpox, took with him a black coat; a blue ditto; a red plush waistcoat and black trowsers (sic). He is a native of Ashreigney, near Chulmleigh, and is supposed to have gone to Plymouth or Devonport.
Whoever harbours or employs the said Apprentice after this Public Notice, will be prosecuted with the utmost severity of the Law; and whoever will lodge him in any of His Majesty's Goals, shall receive One Pound of his said Master.
Dated May 30th 1828"

If he did run away to sea (which seems possible seeing as where he was thought to be heading) he made sure he was going to be well dressed ;)

Anyone know what happened to the lad?
Best wishes
Ann
