I did a search on the name of your great aunt and read a posting on the Tiller Girls site, from someone asking the same question...was this yourself? In this posting was mention of a rumour for a child called Rebecca. I searched bmd for a birth of a Rebecca and found a birth registered for a Rebecca Craw Dec' 1913, mother's surname Downes, at Cannock vol 6b page 1014.
Let me know if I am barking up the wrong tree :)

Searches of "The Stage" newspaper archive are free and return 10 hits for '"palace girls" <AND> ethel <AND> downes' (without the single-quotes but with the double ones, and over 1000 on 'ethel <AND> downes', but none on '"ethel downes"'. You have to pay to view the articles themselves. Google on "the stage archive" to find the site.

After 5 years there is good news.. but also bad news
First good news we have found her Obituary in 'The Stage year books'
page 134 in 1915 Stage year book quote; Downes.Ethel Elizabeth (Ethel Lenore ) April 4th
This IS her but the bad news is we dont know in which country she died or how ? we know she worked in theatre's in Austria as we have post cards and I posted some photographs of her on the old TILLER GIRL website but looking at the date it was in the middle of WW1 the rumour passed down in the family that she was stabbed by a russian prince well thats what my grandfather was told when he returned from the war in france in 1918 was she involved in something ? question is someone knew her to put her Obituary in the year book with the date she died, there is no record of her death here in the Uk records so I need to move to worldwide records, maybe update my Ancestry account
I am gratefull for all your help and advise and will search the old musical hall papers The Stage..The Era.. up to her death and try and piece it altogether
