I have a photo here which is on a postcard. The lady in the front on the left is my Gt Gt Nan, supposedly. I was hoping someone could put a date to it.

Can you give any details of the back of the postcard?

The image of the little lad with the boat is very cute by the way.

I'd guess at 1920s. The cloche hat worn by the younger girl at the front became fashionable about 1925 and she would be most up to date.

It could be a day at the seaside. They dressed like that sitting on the beach. ;)

I'd put this earlier than the 20s - 'cloche' hats notwithstanding :) I'd put this in the region of the first world war. The lady on the left at the back has a long skirted suit that belongs earlier than the 20s - although of course she could be more old-fashioned. Nor do I think it's really a cloche - if you look closely, Mut, it has a transparent brim.

Do we have any dates for your ancestor, Aussie Shep?

But the cloche did have a brim. ;)
according to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloche_hat)

according to fashion-era (google)

"1922-25" - Cloches are worn with small brims at the front.

"After 1926 the only way to update the cloche fashion was reduce the brim substantially."

"By 1928 the cloche hat brim disappeared entirely, so between 1926 and 1929 asymmetric brims reduced often to nothing."

Well according to the 1891 Census she is aged 28yrs born 1863 she passed away 1926. I did start a thread a week ago asking for help locating her birth but she was not to be find, i guess they didn't record her birth.

They look as if they should be a ladies group from a church.
Nearer 1910 than 1920.
They are sat by what looks like an end of pier stage. The wooden boards to the left are in different colours and a metal railing with a woman sat behind, facing forward in an opposing direction.
The child has a sailing boat so its more than likely near water.
This may even be some kind of bandstand in a park with a boating lake near by. The lady stood at the back on the left holding a book, possibly containing choral music so it could be a ladies church choir.
As none of them would be carring a handy digital camera, there must have been a local photographer present that has put the picture on to a poscard.
On the very bottom of the picture, what looks like some small print or handwritting that may hold some clues.
Cheers
Dave.

well according to the family, nanny nelson was very religious and use to make her children recite the catechsims (of the catholic church) and on sundays she use to enter her childrens home rounding them up for church.
They all lived in Rotherhithe / Bermondsey, so would Brighton of been the closest?
However at the time of her death she was living with her youngest daughter who lived on canvey island, essex.

If you want to help Aussie Shep with finding the family
please post on this thread regarding Norah (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51845)

I shall leave this thread open for now to discuss the photograph dates only otherwise we will end up duplicating the research.

Top most point of the sail looks like a little Lads face.

Ah! Yes. Hmm. Sorry. It did look like a face to me but you're right, the lady has something drapped over her arm and is holding the boat!

playle.com/realphoto/backun.php might help.

There is no child.
Part of the ink hand writing gives what appears to be a nose, the rest is the ladys hand with a coat or cardigan drapped over her lower arm to her wrist.
Cheers.
Dave.

As they're all adults perhaps, like David said, it's a 'church' outing...Mother's Union perhaps? Do you have any badges, certificates or other group photo's that might give you a clue? The Mother's Union definately gave certificates to members and I have an old badge.

Aussie Shep,

Can you get out your magnifying glass and get under your brightest light (or out in the bright sunshine) and try to read everything which is on the back of the postcard and everything which is written in ink on the front of the postcard!

Also, is it possible to scan front and back at a higher resolution?

thank you all for you help with the dates.

The address on the card looks like Rotherhithe Street. There is (was) a huge boating lake in Southwark Park in Rotherhithe.

Nanny Nelson lived in Rotherhithe, possibly a day trip to the park. sounds about right. I just googled the park iit was opened in 1869 and it has a banstand and and a boating lake. thank you Vossy.
