Any help for birth of Thomas Cummings, Plymouth Devon born 1810? I've looked in LDS - no sign. Have him on 1841-81 censuses as born in this year in Plymouth. Long shot, but maybe someone............

Hi! I am also researching the Cummings family in Devon. My g.g.grandad, Sampson Cummings was born in East Stonehouse (now part of Plymouth) & his father, Charles, came from the area too. Sampson was born in 1850. I only know of Charles from Sampson's birth certificate, so, I don't know if your Thomas is anything to do with my branch of the Cummings family as, as I'm sure you are aware, there are/were an awful lot of Cummings living in the area! If you come up with anything I'd love to hear from you & I'll gladly let you know if I find any details. Thanks! Heather Wood (nee Cummings)

thanks - I can't find any link between my ggg Thomas and your ggg Charles at the moment. The www.familysearch.org site identifies the following:

Sarah Hannam born 'about' 1798 Scoth, Somerset
married Charles Cumming 10 Dec 1848 at Stoke Damerel, Devon
and gives birth date of this Charles Cumming as 'about' 1804 Taunton

these sound very much like Sampson's parents.

Just too early for the Devon FHS CD of the "Deanery of the Three Towns"

Many thanks for your most useful site . So far I have marriage record through LDS records (batch No etc) of my gg grandad, Thomas Cummings - 7 Dec 1836 Saint Mary Major, Exeter, Devon - to Sarah Elson but can't find any ref to his birth (1810 'Plymouth' given on all censuses). I know this is the Thomas I seek in my cummings research. if I go to an LDS family centre and look up this 1836 marriage record, will it give me the name of his father? Family have told me Thomas's father was Scottish - but no-one can tell me his name.
The cummings's I've pinned down so far, including Thomas were in mariner occupations , coastguards, lighthouses etc and Thomas's father may not have been born in 'Plymouth' but ended up there from, I am told, though his maritime work. I'll explore the Devon site you have given me - many thanks again. I'm a bit of a novice here and have been using 1837 online, 1901 census and the wonderful resource of the mormon site. Looks like I now have to get down to some serious digging!

Wow! thanks for that! It certainly looks like you've found my gggg grandad & grandmother's details for me! - now I can continue my search. I too have found some good, free, info ( lists of marriages etc @ Devon FHS site. Also try http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~terryw/plydirec where you'll find lists of names, where they lived & what their occupation was at such times as 1814 etc - that's where I found 100's of Cumming/Cummins/Cummings in the Plymouth area. eg the 1836 list for Plymouth shows a Thomas Cumins, 'gent' as living in Union St. & the 1830 index shows Thomas Cummins as living at 3, Union St.! - Good luck! I'll go & check out the web site you've given me now! Regards, Heather
