Thank you Phil.
This info we have in our family records and a little I've found over the past year or so; it's John and Hannah where we're having the problem finding any info.

Hello. This family may be linked to your John Atkinson and Hannah Whitfield.

John Atkinson m. Alice Spence 30 May 1780, Pateley Bridge. Their (known) children:-
James b1782, Alice b1785, Mark b1787 all christened at Dacre Banks, near Pateley Bridge.

It's probable that they had more children, including a son named for his father.

Whitfield and Bradberry were used as christian name markers, so perhaps Spence was too.

Best wishes in your search.

Hi Justme,
Thanks for the info. What record is this info from ?
It seems quite plausible that they had a son John early 1790's and that John's son John had a son Spence!

Having seen IGI M009704, C009704 and IGI 7507913, I visited Yorkshire and checked out the Pateley Bridge Parish Registers. There they were.

My last info was insubstantial, but basically correct except that the births were at Dacre Banks and christenings at Pateley Bridge. I've revisited North Yorkshire County Records Office, and am now more confident of my data.
On their microfilm of the parish registers for Hartwith cum Winsley there is a record of the baptism of John, son of John Atkinson, 11 May 1787. No other information, but in the same parish 5 years later there's Betty, daughter of John Atkinson, a joiner, and his wife Alice.
Then on the film of the Hampsthwaite registers is the record of the burial of 39 year old John Atkinson on 20 May 1826 (the minister, incidentally, was Timothy Metcalf Shann).
That ties up with a will quoted on Tony Cheal's web-site

So, to recap & expand - John Atkinson m Alice Spence 30 May 1780, Pateley Bridge.
Their children, christened at Pateley Bridge unless otherwise stated:-
Mary b1780, Whitehouses; James b1782, Dacre Banks; Alice b1785, Dacre Banks; John b1787, (chr Hartwith cum Winsley); Mark b1789, Dacre Banks; Betty b1792, (chr Hartwith cum Winsley); Sally b21 Dec 1794, Londs Foot; Hannah b 1798, Londs Foot.

I've yet to find out where Londs Foot was.

John senior & Alice (& Mark) were also buried at Hampsthwaite but no headstones visible. However, their son James & all his family are there, and David & Alice the children of John Atkinson & Hannah Whitfield. Their stone was erected by David's 2nd wife.

Hannah Whitfield died at the age of 72, & was buried at Hampsthwaite on 25 Dec 1858.
Regards, Ess.

Thanks Ess,

Since you made the original post re this family I've been keeping an eye open but couldn't find anything concrete to connect them and I was leaning towards a Thomas as the Father of John (joiner b 1786/7) since his oldest son was Thomas b1814.

I found the info re Tony's site and I have the marriage cert for John and Hannah 1813, the parish reg entry for the birth of John b 1816 and the death cert for Hannah 1858.

Londs Foot is probably Lanes Foot at Monk Ing, Dacre since I found a reference in Nidderdale museum records that says the Grandfather of John (b 1816) built the house at Lanes Foot.

Which graveyard in Hampsthwaite are John Alice and Mark etc buried in and where can I get the records? Do you know the death dates?

I think this is the correct couple because of
1. Alice Spence - Spence Atkinson b 1864
2. Londs Foot most likely Lanes Foot
3. Mary, Alice and Hannah are in the subsequent family even though No Mark, Betty or Sally. There is no James but we know of him re Tony's site about the will.
4. It mentioned that John was a Joiner as was his son b 1787.

Would you email me? hugh(at)newfoundland-florists.com

Thanks for all your effort; since I'm so far away it is slow going as I cannot verify many things that I find.

Hugh
