For the first time ever I have logged on, gone from the main page straight into new posts which I always do to be told there are none. Then when I fiddled about a bit I got a message which said there were 2 but nothing new or unread since I last logged on. I haven't logged on since last night so either you have all gone off to a party without inviting me me (|sad1|) or I have pressed the wrong key. tried going out and coming back in to find the same.

Did you peruse the forum without logging in before you logged in? Have you cleared your cookies?
Either of those could cause this I believe. The forum uses cookies to note what you have read and clearing those will possibly mean that you are going to be presented with a message about no new posts.
I will just log off and back on - after clearing cookies - to see ;)
Mark
OK, it isn't cookies (silly me - the forum itself deletes those when you log off) - but something, cache perhaps, affects things. I cleared all the "private data", including cookies, cache etc - then, when I logged back in, only two posts show as unread (which were posted whilst I was clearing the data and logging back in).

You see, I don't ever get these problems, and I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that I NEVER log off. I simply close down the site, so that when I click the bookmark again from my Favourites I come straight back and am automatically logged in.
There again, I may just be lucky. I'm sure Mark will know if logging in and out has anything to do with things :)
I log out when I leave - but when I return and log in, I can see the unread messages etc.
Sounds like Sue had cleared something in her browser which caused the issue.

Yes Neil it is! Like the others i never log off but the OH has been mucking about with the PC so marvellous Mark may have it. I bet he cleared my whatsername!
I am sooo relieved you didn't all clear off and leave me behind!
Sx
Aye - your "whatsername" has been cleared Sue ;)
I expect you are right though - someone has cleared all the bits and pieces from the browser and thus you had the problem when you logged in. Hopefully now all will be back to normal :)
Mark :)

You lot are funny!
Anyway all is fully restored thank goodness. He means well but between him and Mcafee (who installed itself a little folder in outlook and decided to randomly assign emails as spam without my noticing or asking it to) I have to be on my toes around here.
:D Sue
Obviously getting very set in my ways as I cannot abide change!

Our computer, used by the family, loses its cookies fairly often.
Someone in the household, who will remain nameless but whom I have been married to for a fair number of years, "cleans" the computer regularly, but the programme is designed not to delete cookies, so he says it's not him.
Otherwise, one of the brats has a peculiar way of signing out of his email box which clears the computer of cookies - and which is a d****d nuisance when I've just got it set up with all my sites recognising me, especially since I did a very silly thing which was to change my email address for family history and choose one which is just too long to type in time after time http://www.emoticonland.net/smileys/Expressions/expresss474.gif (http://www.emoticonland.net) - but he doesn't live at home any more ... luckily for my peace of mind.
When I signed on this evening, the computer had been cleared of cookies, so I had to log on to Brit-Gen, but I didn't get any adverse messages when I clicked on new posts. I even got four pages of them - great!
|idea| Come to think of it, the above-mentioned son came round this afternoon. I wonder if he read his emails?
