...John M. Rossiter born 1835 in Child Okeford...I think the following must be your John ROSSITER and household in the 1871 census. There are 2 more listed but they don't match your description. This John lives at Millbrook Farm, Child Okeford, Dorset. All members of the household with the exception of Ann NEWMAN are unmarried:

Name / Age in 1871 / Birthplace / Relationship / Occupation
John Rossiter 39 Child Okeford, Dorset, England Head Farmer Employing 1 Man and 1 Boy
Lydia J Rossiter 42 Child Okeford, Dorset, England Sister
Ellen Woolfrey 14 Child Okeford, Dorset, England Niece
Ann Newman 60 London, Middlesex, England Servant Dairywoman [Domestic Serv]

Source information: RG10/1974
Registration district: Sturminster
Sub-registration district: Sturminster
ED, institution, or vessel: 6
Folio: 77
Page: 22
Household schedule number: 115

Hope this helps. More to follow...

Further to my previous message...

Just down the road [and on the same census image] at a place or on a street called Hollow [with Beer House written in underneath] is another ROSSITER family. Possibly this is a relative of John ROSSITER, maybe an uncle?

Name / Age in 1871 / Birthplace / Relationship / Occupation
Robert Rossiter 75 Child Okeford, Dorset, England Head [Widower] Retired Butcher
Catherine Rossiter 49 Child Okeford, Dorset, England Daughter [Unmarried] Dressmaker
Robert S Rossiter 14 Blandford, Dorset, England Grandson Scholar
Willoughby R Brown 7 Cerne Abbas, Dorset, England Grandson Scholar

Source information: RG10/1974
Registration district: Sturminster
Sub-registration district: Sturminster

Household schedule number: 119

...Ann A. (maiden name unknown) in Shillingstone, Dorset. Ann was born in 1841 in Shillingstone...The following is pure hypothesis but maybe something to think about:

In 1871, Ann NEWMAN is a servant living in the ROSSITER household.
In 1881, Rose J. NEWMAN is a niece living in the ROSSITER household.

What if John's wife, Ann A. ROSSITER, is Rose's aunt [and maybe was somehow related to Ann Newman] and her maiden name was NEWMAN? There is an unmarried Ann A. NEWMAN in the 1871 census, born in Shillingstone and living in Shilling Okeford and Shillingstone, Dorset at Bere Marsh:

Name / Age in 1871 / Birthplace / Relationship / Occupation
Henry Roffey 46 Lambeth, Surrey, England Head Farmer of 140 Acres and Employing 5 Men & 3 Boys
Jane Roffey 66 Shillingstone, Dorset, England Wife Farmer's Wife
Ann Amelia Newman 33 Shillingstone, Dorset, England Stepdaughter Farmer's Daughter
William Edmonds 30 Child Okeford, Dorset, England Servant Farm Serv Indoor
Eliza Coombs 24 Sturminster, Dorset, England Servant Dairymaid

Source information: RG10/1975
Registration district: Sturminster
Sub-registration district: Sturminster
ED, institution, or vessel: 12
Folio: 77
Page: 1
Household schedule number: 3

As I said, pure hypothesis and a long shot but you never know...

Ann A. ROSSITER: I did a search in the 1871 cenus for all Anns born in Shillingstone and I didn't see any others which come close to matching your Ann in name and age.

WOOLFREY: There is a WOOLFREY family living down the road in the 1871 census -- they may be related since there is a WOOLFREY niece living in the ROSSITER household. Let me know if you want the details for Alfred WOOLFREY, 31 years old, farmer and his family.

Hollow and Millbrook Farm: In the 1891 census, the area around Millbrook Farm is called "The Hollow"

Hi Trish,

Thanks for the mega post. Really do appreciate the time and effort you have put in on that.

I agree that John's wife does look like being Annie Amelia Newman.

It also looks like John has a sister married to a Woolfrey and that they are the parents of Ellen, John & Ann's niece.

Strangely, the age gap between John and Ann varies at each census.

I suspect that Ann Newman (aged 60 from London) may be Annie Amelia's mother.

How does that sound to you.?

John Rossiter was certainly married into the Woolfrey family in Childe Okeford, but I will need to check with my family tree to see where. I will come back to you when I have checked my father's notes. My father was Albert Reginald George Woolfrey, and although he was born in Bath in 1909 (he died last October) he lived much of his early life in Childe Okeford.
