I have a lookup request please for the 1841 census
I am looking for the Coe family :-
Father - John Coe b Edgefield 1786
Mother - Anne ( Chapman ) Coe b about 1786 ? Edgefield
Anne b 1814 Edgefield
Sussanah b 1817 Edgefield
Sarah b 1820 Catton
John b 1822 Catton
Susan b 1822 Catton
Harriet b 1827 Catton
Mary b 1829 Catton
Joseph b 1831 Catton
Believed to be living either in Catton, Norfolk or possibly Gissing, Norfolk
John Coe jr emigrated to New Zealand sometime before the 1851 Census and married in NZ during 1851 but I am trying to narrow down the year range that he may have emigrated from the UK.
Any light shed on this would be very much appreciated.

Hello
I've just run through the 1841 census for Catton and cannot locate your Coe family there. The problem is that Catton is close to Norwich and they could easily have been living in the city in 1841 - or if they were in Gissing by 1851, they may have been in any of the parishes between these two places.
I take it that you have the 1851 census entries for John Coe aged 61 and John Coe aged 85, both born in Edgefield?

This is the entry that I have been given for the 1851 Census
Name Relationship Mar Age Sex Occupation Birthplace
John COE Head W 61 M Farming Bailiffe Edgefield-Nfk
Mary COE Daur U 21 F Housekeeper To Her Father Catton-Nfk
Joseph COE Son U 21 M Shoe Makers Apprentice Catton-Nfk
Address: Upper Street, Depwade
Census Place: Gissing Depwade, Norfolk
PRO Reference: HO/107/1821 Folio: 447 Page: 7 FHL Film: 0207474
I dont have the entry for John Born 85 b Edgefield, I presume he is a great Uncle. John 61 - his father is Joseph and John 85 would be Joseph snr's brother.
So by 1851 the Father John 61 had moved with two of his children to Gissing. I know that his son Joseph married and stayed in that general area eventually settling in Tivetshall St Margaret.
But its John, who would be 19 for the 1841 census, that I'm really trying to to find. I am trying to narrow down the year range that he arrived in Australia before moving on to New Zealand. And of course whether he went of his own accord or was sent by one of Her Majesty's Judges. John ( b 1822 ) and Joseph ( b 1831 ) were both leather workers and John when he arrived in NZ was a boot maker who seemed to be following the Army or Fencibles around,( possibly ). Anyway the tradition of Leather work lasted another two generations, his son John being a boot maker and his son being a saddler.
Hope this sheds a bit of light
I really appreciate the help

The other 1851 entry is:
HO107/1810 f322 p6
The Street, Ingworth
John COE, Head, M, 85, Pauper Agricultural Lab, Edgefield
Susan COE, Wife, -, 81, ---, Lassham
The hunt for 1841 would be problematic as the city and southern part of the county have not been indexed.

I'll pass that info re John 85, 1851 Census onto someone who is tracing that line, I don't know if that have that info, but they will now.

I think I might have something to go on now
its a sneaking suspicion
"Hardley" in Lodden & Clavering
according to the Norfolk Transcription Archive
John Coe 50 Ag lab
Ann Coe 50
Mary Coe 11
Joseph Coe 9
Does the 1841 census CD give any more info than this ??
If these are my Coes
John & Anne would have been born & married in Edgefield
Joseph & Mary - born in Catton

The 1841 census gives little information. Name(s), age (rounded down to nearest 5 years for those aged 15 or over), occupation, whether born in same county and if suffering from a disability. Unfortunately birthplaces are not shown
The entry is at HO107/779/09 f4 p2 + p3; all the family were born in Norfolk, but no additional information is recorded.
I've just checked the 1851 census and there are no COEs (or variants or anything similar which may be a transcription error) shown born or living in Hardley.

Thanks Geoffers
Yes by 1851, the Coes had sneaked away to Gissing and later to Tivetshall St Margaret for the 1871, but this lot in Hardley look very suspicious to me.
Its the best lead I've had in months.
By checking the LDS search site, I know there weren't too many Joseph Coes that age in Norfolk, nor Mary and the approximate ages for John & Anne..... the ages seem to line up and John Coe turns up again as an Ag labourer in 1851.

The 1851 census transcript shows only one entry where there is a father John COE and a son Joseph COE - this is the one you have. Just in case the Hardley family aren't yours, you might try searching the GRO death index to see if the entire Hardley family is recorded as being wiped out. If they aren't, then I would work on the basis that this is your family.

PS
what is the current staus of the Norfolk Transcription Archive site
or more to the point the future status
is there any way us mere-mortals can contribute to the cause
that site has been an absolute Godsend for me
and no doubt - many others

Several poeple have expressed an interest in taking it on. It's down to Andrew to decide who seems to be the best option on the technical side, whilst still offering free access to users.
