I would think that somebody was having a brainstorm!!
The Northampton Union workhouse building still stands today. It is in a pretty sorry state, as it had been St Edmunds hospital up until about 8-9 years ago, when it closed down. It has recently been bought by developers and is being refurbished into ...I think...residences.

The Northampton Union is the registration district at the top of the copy of the birth certificate of John Henry WATKIN. The next line refers to the sub-district of Saint Giles in the County of Southampton. But the child was born in George's Place Northampton. Is there a district called Southampton? Perhaps I had better ring them up tomorrow to explain it to me!!

George's Place does not exist now, but George's Row is right in the centre of Northampton opposite All Saints Church. George's Place may well have been what we now know as St Giles Square. I have an old street map of Northampton lurking somewhere, if I can lay my hands on it I will look it up for you.

As for a district of Southampton...there certainly isn't now. But strangely, there is a Southampton Road...so maybe there used to be.
I have tried googling, but came up with nothing.

Where do I obtain a marriage certificate for William WATKIN to Mary HOBSON on 1 June 1815 in the Northamptonshire Marriage Index 1700-1837 Guilsborough. Is it the same office at the GRO? Thank you for all your helpful replies.

No. Unfortunately certificates only came into being in 1837.
The central library in Abington Street Northampton and the Records office at Wooton Hall Park Northampton both hold filmed copies of the local parish registers. Perhaps give them a ring, I would try the library first and ask if they will send you a photocopy. As you have the details, it shouldn't be too difficult. I have always found them most helpful.

Old photos (http://www.northants-familytree.net/northampton%20town%20streets2.htm) including George Row, which might well have been George Place.

Many thanks Sue2white for the info on Northampton. I am steadily working through the certificates of the family and I note that there was a Watkin Terrace on the Victorian Map!!

Lol
Watkin terrace is still there. Tall terraced houses which have mostly been converted into flats these days for students. Wouldn't it be good if your family are linked to the street!!
