I got interested in researching my family because my birth certificate states that my father was one Edward John Wood my mother's first husband, but I was always told that my birth father was actually William James Dagg and my mother changed both her and my surname by deed poll about a year after I was born in 1956. How many times has that kind of thing happened throughout history I wonder? but it spurred my interest in the detective work involved in researching a family tree, even though the paper trail, even when we can read it! - some of the census copies are impossible aren't they? - may sometimes take us in entirely the wrong direction! Because it occurs to me if my birth father was erroneously recorded then so must many others have been With much help from some wonderful members of my newly found extended family (on three continents) who I have met along the way, I have managed to go back eight generations to Philemon Chalk born 1717 a direct ancestor of my mother, and to Thomas Spice born 1703 the 4th great grandfather of my birth father. I have also corresponded with some wonderful people, some of whom had absolutely nothing to do with the names I have been researching, but had a like-minded interest in "solving the puzzle, I do a lot of my research on the internet and am keen to pass on the help that I have received, If anyone is interested I have a website and would be pleased to hear from anyone who has an interest in any of my surnames
