I am trying to finout about my ggreat grandparents.

I was told that they were possibly called George Cubbins and Caroline McMurry, but 2 people have now said its possible that it was Fredrick Cubbins.
How do I find any of this out.

The only start I have is my nan Norah was born 1922-3.
Not alot is it!!!!!
Thank-you :)

Only 7 Cubbins listed in 1940 Kelly's Trade Directory for Liverpool & its Environs (covers Birkenhead & Wallasey). All living on the Wirral.

Albt. 84 Church Rd, Higher Tranmere
Mrs Alice 137 Elmswood Rd, Higher Tranmere
Edwd 24 Carlisle St, Birkenhead
Edwd. ship bldr. 81 Grange Rd West, Birkenhead
Fredk painter, 29 Beverley Rd, New Ferry
Thos. painter, 42 Salisbury Drive, New Ferry
Wm. painter, 128 Hinderton Rd, Tranmere, B'head

Norah's birth certificate will give her parents' names & her father's occupation. Then work back to her parent's marriage certificate & so on. Once back to the 1901 census you should find it easier.
You probably know more about the family than you think.

Thanks for that information, I really dont know anything about my family. I have only just founda plot for when my nan Norah died, that was back in 1962. It is quite frustating not being able to do this.
I am thankful for the tips though :)

Is there a gravestone on your nan's plot? That may give details of the family. If it was a private plot, then there may be other family members buried there as well. Where is the plot? If it is on the Wirral & you know the details, then I will be able to take a photo of it & email it to you. She is most likely to be at Flaybrick or Landican Cemetery, but could be at Bidston churchyard or one of the other churchyards.
Also, any idea of family occupations? Or any addresses where she lived? The trade directories may help. They have a selection of them at my local library (Wallasey).

Hiya Wirral, sorry I haven't replied sooner easter weekend has kept me really busy :)
Sorry I wrote that in wrong about my nans plot, she was cremated and that was in Oldham.
She moved to Oldham I believe after her husband died and thats where she met my granddad.

I have a couple of birth certificates here about 2 of Norahs children that she I believe she had adpoted and they have a couple of addresses on them.
David was born 1950 born 56 Church Rd. This could have been the hospital. Also on the mother place it says she lived at 10 Woburn Place Birkenhead.
This is also the same on the certificate for Stephen born 1952.
Is this any help, I know its not alot sorry :(
Thanks for your help though :)

Hi Scooby
Yes, 56 Church Road is St Catherine's Hospital, in 1940 it was Birkenhead Municipal Hospital & before that it was Birkenhead Workhouse. My daughter was also born there, long after the workhouse! In fact she missed out on being a Royal Wedding (Chas &Di) baby by 3 hours!

I have found a Fred Cubbins with his family in the 1901 census RG13/3383 folio 49 page 22 2 Brownlow Road, Higher Bebington, New Ferry, Cheshire
Thomas head M 40 house painter Tranmere, Cheshire
Eleanor wife M 40 Selby Yorks
Thomas son S 17 gen lab New Ferry Cheshire
Alice dau S 16 New Ferry
Emma dau S 15 New Ferry
Eliza dau S 12 New Ferry
Edith dau S 11 New Ferry
Jack don S 9 New Ferry
Fred son S 10months New Ferry

Hi again
You could look for Norah's birth on 1837 online. Try Cubbin if you do not find her under Cubbins. You will need the certificate to confirm who her parents were, otherwise you may end up on the wrong track. Cubbin/s is common in Lancashire as it is a Manx name. Did you know that about 80% of Manx names start with the sound K, C or Qu - as in Kirwan, Christian, Quayle?

I didn't realise this was a common name, I have never came across it before so that is interesting to know, thanks :)

Also you other message, the Cubbins in the 1901 census, that is fantastic
Thomas a painter, that rung a bell, I remember being told that Norah's dad was into painting and later on something to do with a shop.
It also might be the right family as Fred was 10 months old, that would make him 22-23 when my nan was born :)

Thank you so much for this :)
