I have just received a death certificate for my relative Henry Appleton who was a cabman. He was killed falling off his hansom cab in Lambeth 1893 aged 44 and an inquest was held in December 1893. It was ruled an accidental death. Would I be able to find the transcripts for his case anywhere?

The Brixton & Streatham Times and Southern Star newspaper covers the time that you are looking at, as does The Brixton Free Press.

If you can track down either of these, there may well be a write-up of the inquest. Copies of both are held by the British Library Newspaper Library.

Newspapers often give more details, have you tried The Times Online (covered Lambeth and was rather like a local rag back then ;)) or the online British Newspapers Site?

You will need to google for them.

South London Chronicle is another newspaper that might have covered it. You could ring up and see if your local studies and achive centre in Bexley has any of the South London newspapers of the period.

Not sure why Brixton/Streatham is suggested?

For Lambeth at this period, I would start with the South London Press.

Given Jobarbra's location, I'd recommend a visit to Lambeth Archives at the Minet Library (http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/Services/LeisureCulture/LocalHistory/Archives.htm), where they have most of the relevant newspapers on microfilm.

If that isn't possible, then Lambeth Archives will do the research for you, and that is far more economical than the British Library's newpaper search service ;)

I've logged into the British Library site and it wants to charge £6.99 for 24 hours......

I have found an article in the Daily News, Meteorological Report Monday 25th December with Henry Appleton and the words cab and 44 years of age.

There is a mention of his inquest in 19th century British Library Newspapers from Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper (London, England), Sunday, December 31, 1893. I don't know how to post a link (sorry!) but could send you a copy of transcript if you wish.

CAR FATALITY AT BLACKFRIARS
Mr. Hicks held an inquest at Lambeth on the body of Henry Appleton, 44, a cabdriver, lately living at 14, Ann’s-road, South-street,Walworth. Thomas Barker, a costermonger, said that about 11 o’clock on Monday morning, Dec. 11, he was in Stamford·street, Blackfriars, and saw a hansom cab suddenly pull out from the near side to pass a van. A four-wheel cab came along in the opposite direction, and the two vehicles collided with great violence. The hansom was overturned, and both drivers were thrown into the road. Mr. W.Redpath, house surgeon at St. Thomas's hospital, stated that the cause of death was laceration of the brain, following a fractured skull. The jury returned a verdict of Accidental death.
