This is only a minor discovery but it may help someone. I was looking at a birth registration on Ancestry and was disappointed to see the area given as merely "Greater London". The name I was searching for is quite common so I was unsure if I had the right person.

However, I found that when I clicked on the option to buy the certificate, just out of interest, I saw that the area given was more specific, being Camberwell in London. I don't know if other registrations are documented in the same way but its certainly worth clicking on the buy option in order to find out.

If you click on "View record" on the left hand side, you also get the information.
The FreeBMD website has even better links. On that you are given the registration district to start with. Also, if you click on the district name, that will take you through links to pages that give the detail about all the towns, villages or parishes covered by that particular registration district, & the reference numbers & letters, & the dates that are associated with it .
