My ggrandfather, Thomas Jones, was born in Ashton under Lyne in 1839, to William & Hannah Jones. In 1865 he was married to Catherine Collister in Edge Hill, W Derby. His address on the M Cert is 13 Horsley St, Hale Lane, and he was a Book Keeper. One of the witnesses was a Caroline Jones - maybe a sister??? William is shown as a Coal Merchant.
I have searched the 1851 Census for the Ashton area to no avail - was he and/or his family in the Liverpool area in 1851 and/or 1861?? In 1871 Thomas & Catherine were living in Exmouth St, Toxteth Park, W Derby.
Many thanks in advance for any info
Regards, Pete

Do you have any idea where Thomas was baptised? When I get some time I will hunt around in the A U L PRs.

Found William Jones + Elizabeth, Thomas & Caroline in 1851. Do you still need the details?

OK, so first I looked under the 1871 census and discovered Thomas is listed as born in Ashton-under-lyme, Staffordshire not Ashton-under-lyne, Lancashire. Assuming the town might be off, but the county likely would not, I found:

In the 1861 census, he (Thomas Rought Jones, age 23, occupation: Banker's Clerk) and his wife Catherine (age 20) are boarding with the widow Ibbeson in West Derby, whose servant is 14-yr-old Harriett Jones:

Name: Thomas Rought Jones
Age: 23
Estimated birth year: abt 1838
Relation: Boarder
Gender: Male
Where born: Stafford, Staffordshire, England

Civil parish: West Derby
Ecclesiatical parish: St Clement
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Source information: RG9/2734
Registration district: West Derby
Sub-registration district: West Derby
ED, institution, or vessel: 38e
Folio: 29
Page: 4

Might this be he? It would fit with his occupation of bookkeeper and his location in West Derby at the time of his marriage - though it looks as if they were already living as married.

Hi Debbie

The only problem with this theory is that the parents of Thomas Rought Jones were Joseph Jones (bookseller in 1841, clerk in 1851) and Eliza Jones. What is more, in the 1841 census, in the same household as Joseph, Eliza & Thomas Rought Jones, there are also Thomas Rought 65, Ann Rought 60 & William Rought 25 - probably the grandparents of Thomas Rought Jones. No sign of William Jones the coal merchant.

Also a query for Pete. How do you know that Hannah is the name of Thomas Jones's mother?

Hi Debbie Ann AND Wirrall!
I am pretty sure that Debbie's Thomas Jones is not the right one - the one that Wirrall found earlier is, I am 90% certain is the right one.
I managed to get a Birth Cert for Thomas, which shows his parents as William & Hannah (Formerly Evans).
To date I haven't found them on the 1841 Census, but suspect that Elizabeth MAY be William's second wife. All I need to do is find Hannah's death - there is a marriage for William to an Elizabeth that could be the one!
Many thanks to you both for your efforts - any further info will be gratefully received!
Regards & a Happy New Year, Pete

Hi Suzuki

Many thanks for this - I'm pretty sure this is my family, although I had Thomas's mother as Hannah (nee Evans), but perhaps Elizabeth is William's second wife.
I haven't come across your families in my tree, but the info will go in my (rather large) possibles file

Regards, Pete
