View Full Version : Mathew MAYERS, GLAMORGAN

Very new to Forum so please exuse if I do not have enough info.
I am looking for Mathew MAYERS married to Elizabeth and in 1871 was residing in Ynsawdre, Glamorgan.
I am unable to find any record of him after this date. I understand they had a daughter Elizabeth and I have been told a family member that she was known as Mears or Smith and sometimes both. Elizabeth 2 married Jeremiah Leahy in Cardiff.
Any help gratefully recieved.

Hallo Pauline, and welcome to B-G
The Surname board is only for registering interests, so rather than locking the thread, as is now usually done for Surnames, I have transferred your post to the Glamorgan board, where hopefully you will receive some answers.

I'm a bit confused. The marriage between Elizabeth MAYERS and Jeremiah LEAHY took place in 1883. Was this Elizabeth the daughter or a second marriage for Elizabeth the mother?
If I have found the correct entry that you refer to in 1871
(RG10; Piece: 5412; Folio: 26; Page: 19)
then Mathew was 31 b Bonvilston and Elizabeth was 21 b Wenvoe, as yet with no children, so their daughter could surely not have married in 1883.
However, looking at the original, I am not convinced that the surname is MAYERS in 1871. Are you sure this is them?
Have you got the marriage certificate for Elizabeth and Jeremiah? What does it say?
Have just relised the significance of the 2 in your original post, so presumably Mathew died?

Many thanks - On marriage cert - father of Elizabeth is shown as Mathew MAYERS, my research then took me to census where I found Mathew married to Elizabeth and therfore presumed that this was mother and father of Elizabeth (Leahy). The problem is that I cannot find anything about Mathew after that census, nothing has appeared in Deaths so far - hence the brickwall and as I am relatively new to this I'm stuck on where to look next.

Sue, You are right my sums seem to be awry - back to the drawing board!

On Elizabeth's marriage to Jeremiah Leahy, what address is given for both of them (Jeremiah might have been living nearby in 1881), and what profession is given for Mathew Mayers? I think the census you found in Ynysawdre is for a Mathew Mazey, though it's not easy to read. It will be easier to search for the correct Mathew in 1881, assuming he has been mistranscribed, if we have an occupation and approximate area to search in.

Also, how old was Elizabeth Mayers in 1883? It would help enormously if we could track down her birth.

The marriage cert; Jeremiah LEAHY, Shipwright, age 21, living at 10 Ellen St, Cardiff, father William, labourer. Elizabeth MAYERS, age 19, living at 24 Ellen St, Cardiff, father Mathew, labourer.
The 1891 census shows 24 Ellen St, John LEAHY,hd, Shipwright - Elizabeth wife born Cardiff. It also shows an Ellen Smith age 21 sister in law. So far I cannot find any Mayers so could it be a misspel and be MEARS?
Thank you for your time - it's great to have someone to run these mysteries by.

Well I've found Jeremiah in 1871. Doesn't help that he too seems to change his name from Jeremiah to John, but this seems to be him, born in Penarth.
RG10; Piece: 5361; Folio: 110; Pages 37 and 38
7 Rosemary Street, Cardiff
William LEAHY Head 60 Labourer b Ireland
Catherine Wife 47 b Ireland
William Son 16 Labourer B Glamorgan, Cardiff
Jeremiah Son 10 Scholar b Glamorgan Penarth
Elizabeth is proving a tad more elusive, but I shall have another look!

The 1881 Wales census for 24 Ellen Street in Cardiff seems to imply a remarriage/blended family and accounts for why Elizabeth Mayers has a sister named Ellen Smith:
Martin Smith, head, mar, 45, b. Ireland
Eliza Smith, wife, mar, 42, b. Ireland
Eliza Smith, dau, 16, b. Cardiff
Daniel Smith, son, 15, b. ditto
Thos. Smith, son, 8, b. ditto
Margt. Smith, dau, 11, b. ditto
Ellen Smith, dau, 10, b. ditto
Ellen Leary, sis in law, wid, 54, b. Ireland
John Smith, son, mar, 26, b. Cardiff
Catherine Smith, dau in law, 23, b. ditto
Martin Smith, gson, 2, b. ditto

Well done Adele. Ellen Street and Rosemary Street were adjacent, and right in the heart of the Irish community in Cardiff. Looking at the rest of Ellen Street in 1881 I see that there was a James Smith next door at No.23 and several Leary families. I wonder if Leary/Leahy sometimes got confused when most of them were illiterate?

1871 census: 24 Ellen Street
Class: RG10; Piece: 5361; Folio: 106; Page: 29
Elizabeth SMITH Head W 36 b Ireland
John SMITH son 17 labourer b Ireland
Eliza SMITH dau 8 b Cardiff
Daniel SMITH son 6 b Cardiff
Margaret dau 4 b Cardiff
Ellen SMITH dau 1 b Cardiff
Ellen ROE sister in law widow 45 b Ireland

1861 census: 2 Ellen Street
RG9; Piece: 4035; Folio: 45; Page: 22
Eliza SMITH mar 28 labourer's wife b Ireland
Ellen REHO lodger wid 30 laundress b Ireland
John SMITH son 7 b Ireland
The name of Ellen here seems to be written REHO (and is transcribed such) and in 1871 appears as ROE, but bearing in mind the 1891 census entry I think this is the same Ellen KEOGH - a more plausible Irish name.

Many thanks - this is becoming more intriguing and could well be the reason why my mother once said that she was Elizabeth Smith Mayers/Mears. Now I'm not sure which path I should take, more and more confused!

Are you a member of Glamorgan FHS (http://www.parishchest.com/shop/index.php?cmd=listlinkeditems&cat=D166&breadcrumb=Societies+%26+Groups:Glamorgan+FHS)? They have indexed a lot of parish records and do free searches for members. Or, as you live in Cardiff, perhaps you could get along to their Research Centre in Aberkenfig. You might find some records there which will help you straighten things out.
