Not sure that they have many marriages for Gorton - if not, Manchester Central Library have lots of records, but there appear to be a good few churches. Have you any idea which one?
Have a look here (http://www.manchester.gov.uk/info/448/archives_and_local_studies/464/church_register_list/19) - although I realise you are not exactly handily placed!

Have you tried the Lancashire (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=91) forum? as you know the place and county - this one was for general queries/comments on church registers, rather than specific places.

You could try
http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/indexp.html
but the search function is unavailable at the moment; the site is updated on a daily basis so worth frequent visits;)

I go to Manchester Central Library from time to time, but haven't for ages because my husband is very ill - I will keep on eye on this, but it may be some time before I go again.

Sorry to tell you this, but there won't be any marriages at parish churches in Gorton itself for the dates you name, Ridgeway. None of the Gorton churches had licences in this period. St. James had no licence during the period following the Hardwicke Marriage Act, so you'll find the marriages go up to 1754, and then resume in 1828. Your best bet is to search the marriages at Manchester Cathedral, Stockport St. Mary and Denton, St. Lawrence.

The marriage act is one of the blessings for we genealogists who have family in the Manchester area. Although after 1837 there are hundreds of churches to choose from, the period you seek is really limited for available licensed churches.

Hope this saves you some fruitless searching and at least points you in the right direction. You could also try Ashton-under-Lyne, St. Michael. But I would really stick my neck out for the Cathedral or Stockport St. Mary myself.

Searching the internet for John Moss Stockport St Mary's marriages I came across this posting on another forum and wondered if this might be the marriage you are looking for -

John Moss farmer marr. Betty Heginbotham 16th May 1802 at Stockport by Lic.

regards

It's certainly worth pursuing, Ridgeway. A copy of the licence may also be available at the Chester Record Office. That may at least give you the name of the bondsmen who may be relatives of one of the parties -the licence should also state if your John is a Gorton lad. Had it been by banns, we would usually get 'John Moss of this Parish' because he'd fulfilled the necessary requirement of living in the parish for a few weeks, but a licence is great news.

Next time I'm in Manchester Library I can look the marriage up for you if you like.
