My Great Grandfather Thomas KNIGHT was born in Littleborough, Notts. in 1865, the son of Henry KNIGHT and Alice BREWER.
I'm having trouble tracing his two younger sisters Sarah Jane b.1867 and Alice b.1870 both in Littleborough, after 1891 they both disappear. I can't find marriages for either of them, or deaths, and can't find them for certain under their maiden names either.

One of Thomas's older sisters Elizabeth, b.1847 Blyth, married a William KNIGHT from Gainsborough, Lincs. in 1874. This threw me for a while as her married name was the same as her maiden name, I assume William was a cousin but have been unable to make a connection yet.

I would be very grateful if anyone could help with any of the above.

Other than that, I visited the area last weekend and found several KNIGHT headstones in the cemeteries at Eaton (where Henry was born in 1822) and Babworth, with burials as recent as last year, so there are obviously Knights still living in the area and I would be surprised if we weren't related in some way.

My father's cousin who is now 83 remembers many years ago visiting relatives in or around Worksop, but he doesn't know who they were, it seems to me highly likely they were related to the people in the cemetery at Babworth being so close, or may even have been them. I'd really like to get in touch with any Knights still living in the area should they, or anyone who knows them read this.

FreeBDM lists a marriage Dec 1891 Worksop 7b69 for a Sarah Jane Knight to either George Nicholas Danby or Aldam (sic) Heston.

There is a Sarah J Danley living in Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire on the 1901 Census, although I can't find a marriage with either his name or Sarah Jane Knight.

Census reference: Class: RG13; Piece: 3090; Folio: 128; Page: 34.

George H Danley - Head - 34 - Railway Signalman - Epworth, Lincolnshire, England
Sarah J Danley - Wife - 33 - Littleborough, Nottinghamshire, England
Elsie Danley - daur - 8 - New Cleethorpe, Lincolnshire, England (actually Cleethorpes)
Henry C Danley - son - 4 - Grimsby, Lincolnshire, England
Arthur N Danley - son - 6 - Grimsby, Lincolnshire, England

Looking up the children's births with the idea that you could maybe order a birth certificate and see if the mother's maiden name is Knight, turned out to be more difficult than expected, too. I eventually found an Arthur Nicholas Danby born in 1899 in Grimsby R.D. (3rd quarter, 7a, 597).

With this in hand, I found, Henry Charles Danby, born Caistor R.D., last quarter, 1896, 7a, 670; and Elsie Danby, born Caistor R.D., 1892, third quarter, 7a, 651.

Now for the moment of truth: it would appear that George H. Danley is in fact George N. Danby, and he did indeed marry Sarah Jane Knight!

Name: George Nicholas Danby / Sarah Jane Knight
Year of Registration: 1891
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Worksop
County: Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire - West Riding
Volume: 7b
Page: 69

Yes I found the George Nicholas Danby marriage but then couldn't find them on the subsequent census, I assumed that it must have been a different Sarah Jane Knight, but if there was a transcription error as there seems to have been then that explains it!
I've been going over this for hours, looking at it from all angles, but sometimes it takes someone else to see what's right in front of me! I should be well used to transcription errors by now, they've caused me enough trouble but they still catch me out now and then.
Thanx for clearing that one up, now I just have to find Alice and then try to connect everyone else up!

It looks like Alice died - freeBDM has the following Alice Knight age 24 died March quarter 1894 East Retford 7b7.

Well, thank goodness you found that, Pennydog, as I thought I had looked up all possible permutations on the 1901 Census - and when I found a possibility, I ran it to ground and found it was someone else ... I don't like giving up, but you've given me a good reason to throw in the towel. |bowdown| Good work, kid; next time I'll know to start with the death index!

Thanx for that too, I thought I'd looked for Alice's death, maybe I didn't, or just didn't look late enough? A death at that age is fairly unusual, I may have to order the certificate now and find out what she died from.

I've managed to account for that whole generation now, your help has been invaluable!
