I have tracked my GGG Grandfather, Joseph Stockdale ROTHERY, from Middlesex to Bampton.
The 1851 Census has the family, with his Wife Martha, in Hoxton, N London. He was a Baptist Minister.
In 1871 I found him, quite by accident, in Bampton - with a new Wife, Sarah. Sarah was born in Southwark, Middx. It is definitely him in Bampton, he was born in Basingstoke, Hants. He died in 1876 in Tiverton and both Sarah and his daughter, Catherine Ellen Smith, are named as informants.
I've found that his first wife died in Bampton in 1867, and he was the informant.
I've also found via the Baptist Historical Society that he moved to Bampton in January 1858, and took up ministry of the Bampton Baptist Chapel. It appears he remained their Minister until he died, and is recorded as buried in the graveyard belonging to the chapel. There is mention of the death of Mrs Rothery, but not of a remarriage.
So, could I pls ask for a look-up for him in the 1861 Census, to see which of the family are with him, and whether it sheds any light on who his 2nd Wife Sarah may be. In 1871 they were living on Brook St.
Many thanks - Dave Rothery.
