View Full Version : Masterman: From Dorset to the cotton mills

My ancestors are mainly from Dorset and Hampshire, but one distant relative, CORNELIUS MASTERMAN, a farm labourer of Shapwick in Dorset, moved with his family to Withnell, between Chorley and Blackburn, between 1871 and 1881 and they all ended up working in the cotton mills.
They had lots of children and grandchildren, for example Moses Masterman, who died in 1973, and I wonder if Dorset Mastermans are still alive in the Blackburn area.
It's confusing, as there also seem to be groups of people by this surname in Lancashire before Cornelius arrived.
Many people from Dorset seem to have gone north as, when Cornelius died, his widow married another Dorset man working in Lancashire.
Anyone know a good website about this area of social history?

I don't know of websties dealing with this aspect - but there if you're ever in the area, there is Helmshore Textile Museum at Haslingden

which will give an idea of mill working.

I recently found a whole family who went missing in 1841...

No "MASTERMAN" found in 1841 Census for Winterborne Stickland on the Dorset OPC except this entry... some very strange names? Did people disguise their real names? Or was it just the Enumerator's bad handwriting? I have tried to find out who they actually were. I think they are Masterman's. Any further contributions or corrections would be most welcome.
