I have found my great grandfather listed as a silversmith, jeweller, watchmaker in a Bristol Directory for 1865. If he listed himself as a silversmith, would he have had to register a hallmark? If so, where could I find such information? Thank you for your assistance.

Hallmarks of Makers have to be registered with the relevant Assay Office to be considered genuine. However, nothing to stop anyone inscribing anything with anything - unless it is intended to deceive.
I think (but am not sure) that he would have had to be a Master Jeweller to have his "hallmark" accepted by the Assay Office.
Try Googling Assay Offices - or go and look up Hallmarks in a suitable book in the Library - you never know, he might be there!
