I have found a description of a document on the The National Archives which mentions the fact that a Rowland Dudley (a possible ancestor of mine) was, in 1633, charged at the Worcester Quarter Session for failing to maintain a road in the Little Witley (Worcestershire) area (he's listed as a supervisor).
Does anyone know how much more detailed would the actual document be? Would Rowland be living in the area? And, what kind of person (status wise) would be chosen for a job like that?

Note that this is just a document listed in Access to Archives (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=045-1_1c1&cid=1-8-243#1-8-243), the document is held at Worcestershire Record Office rather than TNA

I wouldn't like to hazard a guess just on this catalogue entry alone - although it is described as 'fragment'. I suggest that you contact the Record Office directly to see if there is some kind archivist there who wouldn't mind checking for you. The contact details are here (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/archon/searches/locresult_details.asp?LR=45) you will need the reference.

I know: I meant that it was listed on the National Archives website. I guess I should have phrased that better. :o

I will certainly consider that. I'm afraid that the record office might not be willing to help me though: I've already bought a few copies of parish records and am at my limit (for anything else, they've suggested hiring a research, something I can't afford to do). :(

Record Office staff are normally very helpful.
I suggest sending an e-mail, say that you found the document listed on A2A and that it is described as a fragment. Point out to them that you aren't exactly just around the corner, so cannto pop in to check it and would they mind telling you how extensive it is, and what would it cost to copy the document. If they reply that it is just a single sheet of paper/parchment noting the findings in the cases listed then you might infer that it is unlikely to provide much information and bear it in mind for when you win the lottery/pools, etc.

I'll try that. Thank you. :)
