Depends to a certain extent on when and the father's occupation. A good place to start might be the Indexes to Marine Registers of Biths, and Deaths 1837-1965.
Up to 1874 these cover British Merchant Ships, from 1875 they include all ships travelling to/from Britain. These indexes are held at the Family Records centre (FRC) in London - they might also be on 1837online but I'm not sure about that. You can find them (copied onto fiches) at many Local Studies' Libraries.
As with many other topics, a good place to start might be The National Archives online research guides.
Go to their website http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
Move your cursor over 'Getting Started' in the red band near the top of the screen and from the menu, select 'Index to Research Guides' - click on 'B' and scroll down to 'Births, Marriages and Deaths at Sea.'
