Could it be a typo for "slate"?
If it is possibly a typing error (and it may not be) - do you have access to the original record to see what it may read?
What is the source?
When?
Hi Geoffers,
I'm shooting in the dark with this one.
I've been looking for Andrew Wilson who may be the father of Florence May Wilson, born 1868 (or 1876, depending on census), Swansea Glamorgan (my grandmother).

I know I have the right Florence (May) Wilson (because of marriage to John Batt). Her records show the two addresses:
160 Gorse Lane
Swansea Town, Glamorgan, Wales (mother)
New Road
Loughor, Glamorgan, Wales (father)
I'm getting more and more confused. Both sides of the family seem to originate on each side of the Severn, with grandfather moving to Wales although he died in Taunton. The appearance of a slat smelter in Norway threw me.

The original census sheet says Smelter and a few houses below lives a Hammerman. It looks like when the statistics were being checked Slate was scribbled alongside both these occupations by another person and it is just a faint scribble.
Remember folks, this question is on the occupation forum so we should keep our answers regarding the occupation and not the family. ;)
The reason being, is that looking at the Ancestry original census image,
I don't think this Florence is a Wilson. :)
P.S. But then again she may be. I'll need to study the original again.

Carmy's other thread is here (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?p=296557&posted=1#post296557) if you can help with the family search for Florence.
Thanks Mutley.
I don't know if it's possible but I'll try to delete the information on this thread and insert it on the other.
