Can someone help please?
What relationship to me is a) my mother's cousin . b) my mother's cousin's daughter.

Are they second/third cousins or first cousins once/twice removed?

We have been having a big debate about this for the last week and we cannot decide which is correct. I don't think I could go into another week without knowing the answer.

I have just used the Relationship Calculator from Personal Ancestral file to calculate similar relationships to me!

My father's cousin is apparently my first cousin, one time removed, and her daughter is my second cousin.

Not sure I follow that - but it might help ...!!!:D

Assuming a first cousin to your mother, then that person is a "first cousin once removed" to you ... 1C1R.

The daughter (or any other child) of that person is a second cousin to you.

Basically if you step down the generations together (in sync).
brother - sister
brother's children and sister's children are 1st cousins
brother's grandchildren and sister's grandchildren are 2nd cousins
brother's greatgrandchildren and sister's greatgrandchildren are 3rd cousins

if you step down not-in-sync, then you get into the "removed" numbers.

eg brother's grandchild and sister's greatgrandchild are 2nd cousins once removed (2C1R)
brother's child and sister's greatgrandchild are 1st cousins twice removed (1C2R)

Thanks Barbara and Mark for your replies, I think I have got the idea.

I will have a coffee and put my family names in order to work out their relationships to me.

Many thanks for your interest,

Barbara
