Hello from Australia. I am trying to find where my great grandmother was an Inn Keeper. On the birth certificate of my grandfather, she has her occupation as Inn Keeper. Birth was in 1883 and registered in the District of Carlisle, County of Cumberland. I expect that there was an Inn thereabouts.
The address given for the birth reads,Church St. USD. I would like to know what the USD stands for. Hard when you are on the other side of the world.
My first time on this amazing site but I have a lot more questions so I will be back. I hope some person will take the time to respond to this,I will be grateful, Evelyn.

Can you give us the name of your grandfather? We can then perhaps locate him with Mary Ann on the census.

Aha! I think it must have been James Chrystal, as he was the only Chrystal I can see born in Carlisle in 1883. Was his father David Chrystal? The 1881 census for the Cunberland and Westmoreland County Asylum (RG11; Piece: 5156; Folio: 126; Page: 1) shows a 20 year old David Chrystal working as an attendant, born Dysart, Fife, Scotland.
The 1891 census for 10 School Square, Dysart (Parish: Dysart; ED: 2; Page: 5) has the following:
David Chrystal 30 coal miner b Boreland, Fife
Mary Ann Chrystal 27 b England
James 7 b England
Elizabeth A 5 b England
Kate 3 b England
Could this be your family?

Ah yes, I see that David Crystal (no h on the index) married Mary Ann Hudson in Carlisle in 1882.
Mary Ann in 1881 was living with her grandmother, an innkeeper

Hi Sue,
Are you not terrific! Thankyou for all that and yes you do have it correct, so many Davids and James in this family. I will come back to you when I have studied all your information and thank you again,
Evelyn
