Does anybody know where I can find records of any Welsh Coastguards?
They don't appear to be in ADM 175 at TNA:confused:
The chap I'm looking for is Col(e)man FLAHERTY and he served at Caemaes Bay and Holyhead both on Anglesey late 19th early 20th century
Thanks

Perhaps an obvious question, but have you downloaded his service record from the NA, there is a Coleman Flaherty born 22 February 1856 listed.
The other record you could try is ADM 175/82B, this covers those with surnames from D to F for the period 1900 to 1923.

Not obvious at all Martin, I missed that completely! I'm much obliged:)
I now have it confirmed that he was RN 1878-1891 and a Coastguard 1891-1898
He seems to have served on a lot of ships prior to becoming a CG does anybody know where I can find a list of Naval vessels for the relevant period?
According to his "Rating" he was OB AB and BOAT? The first 2 I'm happy with but would he have gone from AB to Boatswain? I thought he would have to have gone to "Leading" first or is that a modern day rank?

You could download his RN service record (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=6849065&queryType=1&resultcount=1), if you don't already have it? That should give you the ships.

Hi Kerrywood,
I've already got his service record thanks. The problem is that being handwritten I can't identify all of the ships he served on. The easy ones are Valiant Neptune etc. Then there's one that looks like "Mutineer" Hmm I think not.
I'm hoping by finding a list of ships I might be able to fill a few gaps

Yes, sorry -- I didn't look far enough up the thread :o
Is there a chance you could post extracted images of some of the bits that you can't read (not the whole document), and perhaps some RN experts would be able to help?

Try the following site to look up the ships.
http://www.pdavis.nl/MidVicShips.php?page=1
The two ships you named were both CG vessels in Ireland, but it would depend when your man served on them.
Leading Seaman was a rate (naval term for rank), which had been in existance since at least 1855. However, as you guessed, Boats was short for Boatswain. It did not necessarily follow that a man would progress through every rate, of which there are many e.g. Captain of the Fore Top, Captain of the Hold etc.

Try:
The Navy List - partial runs available at most record offices and also may be purchased via The Parish Chest (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/www.parishchest.com)
Paul Benyon's web-site (http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/Naval.html)- click on the link for the index to RN ships.

Thanks Martin, that site is great I've now identified the ships he served on and I think I've solved the mystery ship puzzle. It looks like HMS MUTINE he served on her in 1887 and btn 1889 - 1891
It says on the record that he was pensioned 1898, would you know if that pension record would be held at TNA? I'm hoping that there might be more personal info on it.
Thanks also Geoffers "Font of Knowledge" as usual
