A few more notices from the North Devon Journal

21.1.1825 On Monday se’nnight at Wilton near Taunton, Mrs Mutleberry, a respectable old Lady in the 90th? year of her age, who it is said, had the honour of being a foster mother to his present Majesty.

11.2.1825 At Cumbe..es?, in Scotland, on the 14th ult., Betty Shearer, at the advanced age of 99. – She was a kean (sic) Jacobite and often recounted with much enthusiastic delight having seen Prince Charles (the Pretender) as he passed through the village on his march from Dumfries to England.

20.5.1825 Suddenly, on Tuesday morning, aged 64, Jane, the wife of Mr Henry Ralph of Tavistock and formerly of the Green Dragon Inn. She retired to bed in perfect health at ten o’clock and in half an hour after was a corpse. [Charming turn of phrase, don't you think?]

26.1.1827 On Wednesday morning, in this town by the Rev. Mr Gamble, Mr Robert Pulsford, Mason, to Priscilla Holloway – This is the fifth time that the gallant bridegroom has been a votary at the shrine of Hyman; his marriage to his fourth bride took place about eleven months since, whom he had the misfortune to lose about nine weeks ago. [My husband reckons he must have killed them all off....]

By the way, the dates are the dates of the newspapers.
Best wishes

Hi Ann,

Are you sure Mr. Pulsford wasn't a "votary" at the shrine? Notary sounds odd, unless he was notarizing all those marriage and death certs. <G>

I know what you mean Sandie, trouble is I am prone to getting sidetracked with things like this, and now you've started me off on the trail of Mr Pulsford! The 'of this Town' referred to is, presumably, Barnstaple, Devon, as that is where the North Devon Journal was based. So, I've had a quick look at the IGI and I think I've found a couple of "the gallant bridegroom's" previous marriages-
to Betty Parkman on 30.9.1810 at Barnstaple
to Elizabeth Marshall on 19.2.1812 at Barnstaple
I'll keep my eyes open for anything else, and, who knows, I may come up with a sixth bride... ;) Of course, if you want to do a bit of sleuthing.....
Best wishes

1841 Census Barnstaple - Bear Street
Robert Pulsford - 82 - Mason
Priscilla Pulsford - 54
1851 Census Barnstaple - Bear Street
Priscilla Pulsford - wid - 50 - laundress - Chagford.
So, Priscilla wasn't left a 'merry' widow - poor thing had to take in washing! If the ages have been recorded properly she did seem to take on a new lease of life after her husband's demise.
Why am I doing this  anyone would think I hadn't got any of my own ancestors to track down!
Best wishes

know what you mean Ann I get very sidetracked looking for others but I think its just the satisfaction one gets from just finding info and researching I enjoy doing it I find sometimes when I spend some time looking for others it helps me to focus and find more about my own a 2 way pleasure.

thanks for giving closure to Robert & Priscilla perhaps he was just unlucky before or rather his wives were!!!
